POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Web Developer to join our team. Reporting to the Senior Product Manager, you will be a key member of Boston Medical Center Health System’s (BMCHS) digital team within the Marketing and Communications department. The ideal candidate will lead the development, optimization, and innovation of BMCHS’s digital web ecosystem, which includes 9 distinct websites build on Drupal and WordPress. The Lead Web Developer will assess evolving digital trends and align web development initiatives with institutional priorities. This role will proactively identify user needs, assess available technologies, provide strategic recommendations for scalable, secure, and user-centric web solutions that enhance engagement and accessibility, and build and configure websites and web applications to improve the overall user experience of our web platforms. In addition to technical expertise, this role requires excellent client-facing communication skills, as you will collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to deliver innovative and effective web solutions, including core members of the digital team across UX, content, project management, and digital production.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Lead the execution of complex and large-scale web development projects, ensuring adherence to best practices in coding, testing, security, and performance
  • Direct the development and integration of both front-end and back-end solutions, contributing to the seamless operation of the BMCHS web presence
  • Lead the design and implementation of integrated systems, and provide guidance to project teams on technical specifications and system documentation
  • Code, test, and deploy complex programs, translating user requirements into robust solutions
  • Proactively manage the stability, security, and performance of the websites
  • Develop and execute test plans, monitor website uptime, and optimize site load times and mobile responsiveness to ensure a seamless experience for all end users, which includes patients, providers, and internal employees
  • Spearhead the integration of third-party technologies and tools and ensure these integrations meet the strategic priorities of the organization and align with best practices for scalability and security
  • Lead regular code reviews, troubleshoot and resolve technical issues to promptly minimize downtime and disruptions
  • Establish coding standards and provide constructive feedback to internal teams, freelancers, and agency partners
  • Evaluate and recommend third party technology/tools
  • Oversee updates, patches, and upgrades for Drupal and WordPress platforms, plugins and themes, ensuring stability of these platforms
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of site structures, processes, and technical configurations
  • Partners with the project management team to prioritize projects, streamline processes, and ensure timely delivery
  • Collaborates with the user experience team to design a superior front end experience for website visitors and backend experience for our editors and page builders, including template and component design and design system maintenance
  • Supports and manages various third-party integrations, including listings management, form platforms, and email marketing tools
  • Utilizes tools like Trello, Jira, and Zendesk for task tracking and issue resolution
  • Manage the relationship with freelance developers and external agencies, setting clear expectations and coding standards to ensure the deliverables meet quality standards and are aligned with business objectives
  • Stay informed on industry trends and emerging technologies to enhance our web presence
  • Mentor team members and guide junior developers
  • Works closely with business units and internal ITS staff; fosters relationships with vendors, partners, and other suppliers

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field (or equivalent combination of formal education and experience) required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • None

EXPERIENCE:

  • 8 years of experience in web development with a strong focus on Drupal and WordPress required

  • Agency experience and healthcare experience, or similarly regulated industry strongly preferred.

  • Experience integrating marketing tools and APIs with websites

  • Experience working in healthcare a plus, or familiarity with compliance-driven industries

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):

  • Expert skills in front-end and back-end technologies like React, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and server-side languages like Python, Java or PHP and other relevant technologies

  • Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Advanced knowledge of Git

  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and compliance practices

  • Experience thriving in fast-paced, deadline-oriented environments with a keen eye for quality assurance

  • Proficient in utilizing ticketing systems for managing and resolving content-related issues

  • Solid understanding of UX/UI principles and best practices

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal abilities

  • Capable of working independently, juggling multiple projects, and meeting deadlines

  • A proactive and self-motivated individual with a strong passion for delivering high-quality web experiences and content management
