The Managing Director, Trust Real Estate will provide oversight to the Trust Real Estate division within BMO’s Trust Department, overseeing the management, administration, and strategic direction of a national portfolio of real estate assets held in trust. The successful candidate will bring extensive experience managing trust real estate assets within a nationally chartered bank regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and will be responsible for ensuring compliance with fiduciary obligations, regulatory requirements, and risk management best practices. This role requires strong leadership skills to mentor and develop junior team members while collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to maximize the value of trust real estate holdings.

Key Responsibilities:

Real Estate Portfolio Management

• Oversee the administration and management of a diverse portfolio of real estate assets held in trust, including residential, commercial, agricultural, and special-use properties.

• Develop and implement strategies to enhance asset value while adhering to fiduciary standards, regulatory requirements, and client objectives.

• Ensure timely property inspections, maintenance, leasing, and disposition strategies are executed effectively.

• Monitor market trends and economic conditions to identify opportunities and risks within the trust real estate portfolio.

• Approve and oversee property sales, leases, and improvements in compliance with fiduciary standards and OCC regulations.

Regulatory & Fiduciary Compliance

• Ensure all trust real estate activities comply with OCC regulations, internal policies, and fiduciary duties.

• Maintain comprehensive documentation and audit-ready records for all real estate transactions and property management decisions.

• Partner with risk, legal, and compliance teams to address regulatory inquiries and audits.

• Implement best practices for real estate valuation, risk assessment, and governance in a fiduciary context.

Leadership & Team Development

• Lead and mentor a team of trust real estate professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and professional growth.

• Provide training, coaching, and career development opportunities for junior team members.

• Establish and maintain best practices in trust real estate administration, ensuring team members are aligned with industry and regulatory standards.

• Serve as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to senior management, trust officers, and other internal partners on real estate matters.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

• Collaborate with trust officers, beneficiaries, co-fiduciaries, and outside advisors to ensure trust real estate assets are managed in accordance with trust documents and beneficiary objectives.

• Build and maintain relationships with third-party property managers, brokers, appraisers, and legal professionals to support trust real estate operations.

• Provide clear and transparent communication with clients and internal stakeholders regarding trust real estate matters, transactions, and portfolio performance.

Qualifications & Experience:

• 10 years of experience managing trust real estate assets within a national bank or fiduciary institution, with a strong understanding of OCC regulations.

• Proven track record of leadership and team development, with experience mentoring and training junior professionals.

• Deep knowledge of fiduciary real estate administration, property management, risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance.

• Expertise in real estate valuation, transaction structuring, and portfolio optimization in a trust environment.

• Strong understanding of Uniform Prudent Investor Act (UPIA), Uniform Principal and Income Act (UPIA), and other fiduciary principles applicable to real estate management.

• Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.

• Bachelor’s degree in Real Estate, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; JD, MBA, or CTFA designation preferred.

Salary:

$140,800.00 - $261,800.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
