What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Youth Program Educator position at BOLT?
We are looking for someone to lead workshops with the BOLT team within BOLT’s summer program with the possibility of extending this role to a permanent, full time role during the academic year. You will work in coordination with the team to implement and execute workshops and support a variety of aspects of the summer program. You will report to the Programs Manager.
We provide change-making knowledge, network, and financial capital to participating youth. Our curriculum consists of (1) community organizing (2) strategic planning & management (3) navigating the local ecosystem of change in Philadelphia (4) and job/career exploration. The first 60% of the program consists of knowledge and network-building and the latter 40% consists of taking action on issues that matter most to them.
- Resident of Philadelphia.
- All three of these clearances are required: Criminal background, Child Abuse, FBI Fingerprints (acceptable if completed between January 1, 2020, and January 1, 2025. If results are outside of this date range, new clearances must be obtained)
- Minimum 2 years of experience in facilitating youth between the ages of 13-18.
- Full vaccination against the COVID-19 virus.
- Willing and able to get around Philadelphia independently; has reliable mode of transportation; having access to a reliable car is desirable.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Legally authorized to be a full-time employee in the US.
- Excellent Facilitator: You are excellent at facilitating youth – that means everyone participating has their voice heard and is energized to learn. You have strong coaching skills and understand that coaching is about listening and asking questions, not taking up space to talk.
- Observant: You understand how dynamics/relationships within the classroom can influence the cohesiveness of a created shared space between youth, facilitators, and/or guest speakers. You are able to navigate dynamics/relationships between all youth and facilitators to ensure all youth and facilitators uphold established community norms, values, and expectations.
- Impact-Oriented: You are impact-oriented. It’s not enough to create something that sounds or looks nice – we need to make sure we have an impact for the people we serve, addressing the problem they face.
- Strong Leadership Skills: You are skilled at leading teams, helping cultivate them into stronger leaders and coaching them on growth opportunities. You are confident, but do not have an ego - you are humble. You have a strong leadership presence that commands respect and develops mutual trust with young leaders when you enter a room.
- Takes Initiative: We are an early-stage nonprofit, so we are looking for someone who can step up and take initiative. You brainstorm thoughtful, impactful ideas on how to improve our programming and don’t hesitate to pitch it to us, and come up with a plan to implement it.
- Lived Experience: You have lived experience with some of the issues facing Philadelphia.
Summer Youth Program
When: May-August, with the potential for transition to permanent full-time employment
Where: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, In Person
Coordination Responsibility: With the team, you are responsible for implementing the strategy for bringing our program into Philadelphia’s public schools.
- (65%) Session & Youth Project Facilitation: Manage all and lead some sessions for our youth participants. Some sessions, when applicable, can (and should) be led by guest speakers who will receive a stipend for their time and/or student coaches. A portion of sessions will be field trips, such as to Harrisburg or City Hall. You will also be responsible for supporting youth in designing their community action projects to bring change to Philadelphia. You will help them develop milestones that they will accomplish throughout the summer program.
- (25%) Research Community Resources: Collaborate with summer coaches and develop a mini database of resources weekly for young people to be exposed to different community resources and events
- (5%) Partnerships: Maintain existing partnerships and create new ones. Connect young people with resources provided by partnerships. Partnerships include (1) Guest Speakers (2) Youth Groups (3) Community Groups.
- (5%) Impact Measurement: Track progress of participants during our program. Assess changes that need to be made based on participant feedback. Conduct pre-, mid-, post-program surveys and post-program group focus interviews.
- (5%) Timesheets & Attendance: Track attendance of each participant for all sessions and update timesheets for youth every two weeks
