Detention Specialist 

Boulder County Sheriff’s Office - Jail Division

Hiring Range: $4,966 - $6,055

Pay Range: $4,966 - $7,143


The Detention Specialist is responsible for allowing the movement of employees/visitors/inmates throughout the detention facility.  The Detention Specialist also performs a variety of clerical and data entry tasks maintaining the collection of criminal and/or civil justice records at the Jail for the Sheriff's Department. 


Staffing: Must be available to be assigned to any shift to cover a 7 day week, 24 hours, 365 days of the year work schedule (including nights, weekends, and holidays). Shifts are 12 hours per day with (1) 10 hour shift per week, but must be flexible in response to Jail Staffing needs.

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

  1. Responsible for monitoring movement with the facility. 
  2. Responsible for answering calls via radio transmission.
  3. Responsible for answering telephones and questions and learning the various functions on the telephone system.
  4. Assists with public contacts and communication.
  5. Reviews inmate hard cards daily.
  6. Sorts incoming mail from the court relay.
  7. Checks the booking mailbox.
  8. Routinely runs jail lists.
  9. Use and understanding of the Jail Management System computer.
  10. Required to learn the Colorado and National Crime Information Computer, which involves the use of various formatted screens and their functions (CCIC/NCIC).
  11. Performs computer queries in the Jail Management System and CCIC/NCIC.
  12. Responsible for using standard office equipment, i.e., facsimile machine, laser printer, photocopier, computer, etc.
  13. Use of the mug shot photo system for the purpose of printing mug photos and photo line-ups.
  14. Filing of records and inmate files.
  15. Jail Management System data entry.
  16. Enters and retrieves inmate information from various sources.
  17. Required to work independently with minimal supervision.
  18. Responsible for learning and retaining jail policies and procedures.
  19. Responsible for knowing the dissemination of inmate information.
  20. Required to successfully complete a training program directed by an assigned trainer.

Education and Experience:       

High school diploma or equivalent. Must have at least two years clerical/computer entry experience or any equivalent combination of education or experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  
Working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, and skill in operating office equipment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to perform varied clerical tasks sometimes under pressure of time and heavy workload. Must have a working knowledge of correct English grammar and spelling. Must be able to deal with information of a confidential and/or unpleasant nature. Must be able to learn quickly and retain knowledge of varied and sometimes complex procedures. Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and shift work. May be required to work special hours on short notice. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Must successfully pass a complete and thorough application and background investigation. Polygraph examination and drug screen is required. Typing test will be required. Probationary period of 12 months.

 Physical Requirements:
1. Vision - Dual vision is not required. Single eye correctable vision is acceptable. Constantly uses vision to read teletype printouts and computer screens.
2. Hearing- Dual hearing is required. Good hearing is required in performing a majority of the tasks. Constantly uses hearing to detect sounds of criminal and non-criminal behavior. Constantly uses hearing to distinguish source and content of a wide variety of sounds. Constantly uses hearing to monitor and use a police radio, radio telephone and the standard telephone to communicate with the dispatch center, other officers, and the public. Occasionally must hear people verbally calling/yelling for help from a distance of one hundred feet.
3. Sense of Smell - Intact. Occasionally uses the olfactory sense to detect illegal use of drugs or chemicals. Occasionally uses the olfactory sense to evaluate the presence of toxic vapors, smoke, and fuels.
4. Speech - Must be able to fluently speak and understand the English language. Frequently must converse with others in person, by telephone, and via two-way radio requiring clear diction and audible volume.
5. Body Movement-
  • Arms and Hands - Must have the use of arms and hands with the ability to have extension above the head. Frequently reaches for overhead files. Frequently types on a keyboard and writes using writing tools such as pens, pencils, and markers.
  • Use of Legs and Lower Body - Must have the ability to move around the work area unassisted and climb stairs.
  • Flexibility - Frequently must have the ability and range of flexibility to reach overhead, reach below knees, kneel, stand for long periods and work sitting for long periods.

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Process includes a background investigation, polygraph and drug screen.
