Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department is recruiting for two Seasonal Wildlife Technicians to assist with field surveys, site monitoring, biological inventories, and management of associated data on open space lands. 

Ideal candidate takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Is responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Must follow all outlined safety precautions, especially related to working in and around water. Uses all required safety equipment. This is an hourly position.  This is an 8-month position with an anticipated end date of November 17, 2025. General work hours are 7:30- 5pm, Monday- Friday but limited to 40hrs per week.  Daily schedule varies throughout the field season. Occasionally, field days will run long but work week will not extend beyond 40 hours unless pre-approved and for special circumstances. Due to the field and office nature of the position, the work hours may include early mornings, some evenings, and occasional weekends due to assisting with volunteer programs or special projects.  This position will work at Parks and Open Space in Longmont, CO.  

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work. 

 

Hiring Salary Range: $24.04 hourly

 

Tentative Hiring Timeline: 

  • Phone Screening: February 10th
  • First Round Interviews: February 19th
  • Second Round Interviews: February 27th
  • Reference Check: March 3rd
Specific duties include wildlife surveys by protocols and may include any of the following: 
  1. eDNA, aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish, herpetological surveys, and associated data entry; 
  2. assisting with remote camera studies and/or acoustic recording equipment deployment and maintenance, and small construction or maintenance tasks; 
  3. MBTA clearance or stand surveys for wildlife use in project areas; small fencing projects; avian monitoring; implementation of beaver coexistence measures; 
  4. working with Youth Corps team; 
  5. aspen and/or shrub sampling and stand mapping; spring, stream, and habitat survey work; literature review, research, and summarizing, 
  6. GIS and data entry/digitizing, and compilation. 
  7. This position will collect GPS data in the field using ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey 123 applications. 
  8. May be assigned to assist with research projects by non-Open Space entities. 
  9. This position may participate in UAS flight monitoring for wildlife impacts.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: 

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of two years of college course work in Wildlife or Fisheries Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Biology, or related field. Previous fieldwork, especially terrestrial, avian and/or aquatic surveys and monitoring, GPS experience, and GIS Applications.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Applicants must pass a pre-employment physical and drug test
  • This position requires substantial field time in variable weather, near water and moving across uneven terrain.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Biology/Management.  
  • Previous experience or interest in data entry, curation, and analysis highly desired. 
  • Strong attention to detail. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including technical writing. 
  • Ability to work well with others in a team setting and with volunteers. 
  • Ability to work independently. 
  • Ability to work safely in remote, challenging and rough terrain/conditions. 
  • Previous fieldwork, especially aquatics sampling, VES, avian surveys, and use of GPS and GIS applications strongly encouraged.  
  • Ability to work alone and safely in steep, remote terrain and the ability to work well under occasionally stressful conditions is imperative. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work long hours outdoors and able to hike long distances off-trail and work safely in aquatic environments. Orienteering/map/GPS skills a must. Position often has variable hours, including nighttime and potential weekend work. Uniform is supplied.

Must have a valid Colorado (or state of residency) Driver's License and a good driving record. Candidates selected for an interview will be required to provide a current (within seven days of the interview) motor vehicle record. If the issuance date of the Colorado Driver's License is within six months, candidate will also be required to provide a current motor vehicle record from the previous state of residency.

Must be able to pass a physical screening consistent with the demands of the job: Frequently lifts up to 30 lbs. and carries up to 50 feet; occasionally lifts up to 30 lbs. from floor to knuckle; frequently lifts up to 20 lbs. from shoulder to overhead; occasionally pushes and pulls items weighing up to 100 lbs.; occasionally performs bi-lateral lift of 30 lbs. and carries up to 50 ft.; frequently lifts up to 35 lbs. from waist level and lowers to floor. Frequently bends at waist, squats, kneels, shovels, and rakes. Occasionally climbs ladder; must be able to stand and balance on ladder; occasionally walks over uneven terrain.
