Job Summary
The Director of the Center for Multicultural Life (CML) is a critical position responsible for establishing the mission, vision, goals, and programming structure for the CML and Russwurm African American Center. The Director will be called upon to collaborate with student leaders, faculty, administrators, alumni, and community partners as they chart a novel approach to designing and delivering robust and innovative programming, including all heritage month programming, that centers and supports multicultural life on campus. Additionally, the Director will serve as an advising resource for students, providing information, support, and referrals to campus and community resources as needed. The Director also serves as a general resource to other campus partners and departments.
As a member of the Ladd House team, the Director will also play a role in operationalizing the vision for Ladd as an affirming and supportive campus hub for multicultural life. The Director will collaborate in Ladd, Student Affairs, and across the College to drive creative programming, workshops, educational trainings, and community-building events to ensure students of all backgrounds and identities feel seen, valued, and celebrated year-round. Given this, it is essential that this person demonstrates a high degree of cultural competence.

This position has one direct report and is also responsible for hiring, training and evaluating student assistants in the department. Responsible for managing the Russwurm African American Center budget and student payroll.

Education/Skills Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in a related field preferred.

The Director must be collaborative, well organized, and experienced in advising, program planning, and evaluation. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential. A demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment is critical. Excellent interpersonal skills, presentation, and training skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing are necessary.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
4-7 years experience in a similar role required.

A minimum of three years of experience working with broadly diverse cohorts of students in an educational setting. Commitment to and deep understanding of the concerns of multicultural students in higher education, and a strong appreciation for the diverse needs of all members of the campus community are vital.
Experience using Microsoft suite of tools required. Use of Google suite, network systems and social media preferred.

Standard Work Days and Hours
This is an exempt level position that requires the time commitment to complete the essential duties of the position. The position is scheduled for 40 hours/week, 11 months/year (.92 FTE). Schedule will vary – typical hours Monday – Friday between 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with evening and weekend hours required. This is an on-site role, and candidates must be able to work in person on Bowdoin College Campus in Brunswick, Maine.

COMPENSATION
  • The hiring range for this position is expected to be: $75,500 – $82,000.
