Qualifications:
- Licensed and certified school bus driver in Kentucky or willing to pursue.
- High school diploma, G.E.D., or willingness to obtain a high school equivalency diploma as required by Kentucky law.
- Valid Kentucky Commercial Class B driver’s license with passenger and school bus endorsements.
- Must pass a driving record check and pre-employment drug screening.
Reports To: Transportation Supervisor
Basic Function:
Ensure school buses are properly fueled, cleaned, and maintained, including checking and maintaining tire pressure, oil, and water levels. Operate a school bus according to assigned routes and schedules, safely transporting students to and from school, special events, and field trips. Conduct daily vehicle inspections and perform basic operator maintenance. Assist with loading and unloading students with physical or mental disabilities as needed.
Performance Responsibilities:
Safe Transportation & Compliance
- Operate a school bus safely and efficiently, following designated routes, schedules, and all state and federal regulations related to pupil transportation.
- Transport students, including those with physical and mental disabilities, assist with loading, unloading, and securing wheelchairs as needed.
- Adhere to all applicable local, state, and federal policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Follow and communicate oral and written instructions.
- Manage time effectively to meet schedules and deadlines.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student and family information.
- Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
Vehicle Maintenance & Safety
- Perform daily vehicle inspections, recognizing and responding to equipment malfunctions.
- Conduct general maintenance, including fueling, cleaning, and checking fluid levels.
- Inspect and maintain proper tire pressure.
- Follow proper fueling procedures to ensure safety.
- Wash district vehicles and clean interiors; operate bus wash and steam cleaning equipment as assigned.
- Transport vans and other district vehicles to repair facilities as needed.
- Notify appropriate personnel of repairs or maintenance needs beyond routine service.
- Report unsafe conditions and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
Record Keeping & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of vehicle maintenance, mileage, and student transportation.
- Prepare reports on student conduct, incidents, and accidents.
- Maintain fuel and mileage logs, as well as daily task checklists.
Emergency Preparedness & Student Care
- Attend required safety meetings and emergency preparedness training.
- Administer first aid as needed, following established guidelines and procedures.
- Administer necessary health services, including medication, medical equipment operation, and clinical procedures.
Professionalism & District Representation
- Communicate effectively and professionally, demonstrating patience, tact, and courtesy.
- Support positive relationships with students, parents, teachers, and school personnel.
- Maintain a professional appearance and serve as a positive representative of the district.
- Act as a consistent and positive public relations agent for school and district programs.
Additional Responsibilities
- Keep assigned areas clean and safe; perform grounds maintenance such as trash removal and clearing walkways.
- Comply with all board policies, administrative directives, and school regulations.
- Maintain reliable attendance and avoid excessive unexcused absences or tardiness.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation, Transportation Supervisor, Administrative Staff, or Superintendent.
