$475 per week

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Health Specialist oversees the health and safety of campers and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide health care to meet the individual needs of camp staff and campers.
    • Collaborate with other medical staff to meet medical needs.
    • Follow health care policies/procedures as described in the Voyageur Policies and Procedures.
  • Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.
    • Notify the Program Director of inventory to order all necessary medical supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state standards.
    • Ensure staff and camper health forms are current and on file.
    • Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
    • Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms.
    • File necessary paperwork in the Camper Files.
  • Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
    • Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront, activity areas, out-of-camp trips.
    • Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.
  • Ensure a staff orientation session is delivered on medical services.
    • Ensure camp staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid.
    • Provide/ensure staff and campers are aware of specific camper health and social needs, health center procedures, emergency procedures, staff health assessment of campers, policies on contacting parents, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting.
  • Screen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing camp.
    • Verify health history.
    • Verify emergency authorization.
    • Identify any observable evidence of abuse, illness, or communicable diseases.
    • Keep all medications used by campers and staff locked in the medical bay.
  • Supervise sanitary conditions and Covid-19 safety and prevention procedures throughout camp.
    • Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Program Director and assist in implementing Covid-19 prevention, mitigation, and quarantine procedures.
  • Other tasks assigned by Branch Director to fulfill the mission of VEC.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Two (2) years college experience in Pre-Med or Nursing.
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with youth in a childcare setting, learning environment, camp setting or similar.
  • Must be an active team member.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Good interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Desire and ability to work with youth outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

LICENSURE(S):

Applicant must obtain at least ONE of the following:

  • Registered nurse (RN) or LPN Certification
  • EMT/AEMT/Paramedic certification
  • Wilderness First Responder w/Trained Medication Administration for Unlicensed Personnel Certificate

In all cases, the applicant must have current Adult and Pediatric First Aid/ CPR/AED (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certifications from a nationally/internationally recognized source.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is located at Voyageur Environmental Center, a 100 acre outdoor facility with over a mile of trails over hills and through forests and an active waterfront on Little Long Lake. This position has a significant amount of outdoor work, and individuals must be able to be outside in all kinds of weather.

Individuals must be able to climb stairs, lift at least 50 lbs., be able to stand for long periods of time, walk moderate distances, move objects, reach for objects, and bend/twist at the waist. This is a moderately stressful position that requires the candidate to be in good physical and emotional health.
