POSITION/DEPARTMENT: ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR

EDUCATION: Associate degree from an accredited university or college required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Must have the following knowledge, abilities, and skills :

  • Skills in crafts, music, athletics, and group activity management.
  • Knowledge of various residential activities
  • Genuine interest in people
  • Awareness of need for developing and maintaining interest of the group
  • Willingness to work with residents having been impacted by childhood trauma
  • Tact, sympathy, patience, and understanding.
  • Considerable initiative and judgment in adapting activities to the needs of the individual residents or the group, in securing the cooperation of the residents.
  • Ability to work well with others, especially in a leadership capacity.
  • Ability to connect with resources by being familiar with the community and its resources, social and civic.


MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Must have a complete physical by a doctor prior to reporting to work. Physical health must meet all standards as established by the Department of Human Resources or other agencies governing childcare. Examination shall include tests necessary to determine the employee does not have any communicable disease or condition, which poses significant risk of transmission in the facility. Must successfully complete all phases of pre-service and on-going training, including, but not limited to, physical restraint training, First Aid, CPR/AED, Universal Precautions, and Medication Administration. Must provide a written negative drug screening test to HR prior to being hired.

SUPERVISOR/CHAIN OF COMMAND: Chief Residential Officer

WORKING SCHEDULE: Exempt, full-time salaried position scheduled to meet the needs of the position and BGHNC. Typical work hours are 10am – 7pm Monday – Friday, and two weekends a month. Some trips planned may include overnight.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Activities Coordinator is a full-time staff member qualified by experience and/or training to direct group activities and is responsible for directing and supervising the activities programs which includes Recreational Therapy and the WOW Program. The Activities Coordinator reports to the Chief Residential Officer.

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create a family-style atmosphere in the residential campus setting through activity planning and utilization of the Teaching Family Model of Care.
  • Model appropriate moral, ethical, and professional values for youths, colleagues, and the community-at-large.
  • Post activities well in advance, make substitutions when necessary, and publicize programs among the residents and personnel.
  • Maintain as closely as possible a regular schedule of activities.
  • Plan, direct, and participate in outdoor activities such as trips, walks, camping, sport activities, movie night, game night, campus intramurals, etc.
  • Provide supervision to Recreational Therapist concerning planned activities.
  • Coordinate the scheduling and participation of the World of Works program (WOW).
  • Ensure that all timesheets are submitted for resident participants in WOW.
  • Plan for special holiday projects, birthdays, etc.
  • Complete activities assessments and upon admission and update at least quarterly.
  • Consult with appropriate staff members regarding resident’s participation.
  • Recruit, schedule, and train necessary volunteers to assist in the activities.
  • Determine with the Residential Team where services can be used to best advantage.
  • Hold periodic meetings with residents, giving them the opportunity to express themselves about activities and campus community self determination..
  • Maintain a cross-reference file of sources, people, and organizations contacted for help and/or availability for activities.
  • Assist in maintaining a reference library of activities materials.
  • Assist with resident transports for scheduled outings when applicable.
  • Prepare periodic reports showing progress, success, or failure of activities utilized and projected plans.
  • Order supplies through the proper channel, properly store supplies, and maintain equipment in good working condition.
  • Remain current in the field of recreational and group activities and study similar institutions for suggestions on programs.
  • Inform the Chief Residential Officer of programs.
  • Schedule specific activities in coordination with other campus and school activities, such as therapy, equine therapy, and civic club visits to campus.
  • Establish a work area and maintain a clean, safe working environment.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled Treatment Team Meetings by being prepared in advance and adding pertinent data to the care plan as it relates to activities.
  • Participate in the admission process by doing timely Activities assessments and conducting tours when needed.
  • Attend the weekly childcare leadership program staff meeting.
  • Perform any other related service pertaining to the activities program that may be directed by the Chief Residential Officer and/or CEO.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Direct supervision of residents who are emotionally troubled/challenged. May require physical interventions (restraints), mental creativity, and active participation in sports, educational, social and other physical activities.
