Job Description
TITLE: Garden Program Coordinator
PROFILE SOURCE: Program Professional
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
SALARY RANGE: $15-$22 per hour
PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Garden Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and actively coordinating all garden-related activities within the Boys & Girls Club. Serving as a mentor and positive role model for Club members ages 5 to 18, the Coordinator will engage youth in gardening experiences while providing guidance and support to promote environmental stewardship, healthy lifestyles, and skill development in horticulture and agriculture.
KEY ROLES & ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare Choir Members for Garden Success
· Lead the implementation of garden activities aimed at promoting and enhancing the gardening skills, environmental awareness, and healthy habits of Club members aged 5-18.
· Serve as a positive role model in the garden, demonstrating a high level of expertise, professionalism, and passion for horticulture and agriculture.
Health and Safety
· Ensure a safe and conducive garden environment, actively supervising members in all gardening activities.
· Manage garden areas and equipment, ensuring safety protocols are followed and maintaining a productive garden environment.
Grant Implementation
· Ensure the successful delivery of any grant-funded garden programs, aligning with Boys & Girls Clubs of America priorities and directives from supervisors.
Garden Program Operations
· Foster positive relationships with Club staff, volunteers, and members, creating a supportive and inclusive garden environment.
· Plan and organize weekly garden activities, overseeing equipment and resources for effective garden management.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
· Understand and complete necessary paperwork related to garden activities, such as planting schedules, maintenance logs, and attendance records.
· Adhere to designated clock-in and clock-out procedures.
· Take attendance for garden sessions as instructed.
· Assume other garden-related duties as assigned.
RELATIONSHIPS
· Internal: Maintain close communication with Club staff, members, and supervisors to exchange information, discuss garden-related issues, interpret guidelines/instructions, and provide guidance and support.
· External: Represent Boys & Girls Club as a garden ambassador in the community, fostering connections with local gardening groups, organizations, and stakeholders.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
· College credit hours towards a degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or related field preferred, and/or equivalent garden experience.
· Minimum of two years of gardening experience, including working with youth and supervising volunteers preferred.
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate above-average personal initiative.
· Patience and a strong desire to impart gardening knowledge and skills to individuals from diverse backgrounds in an unbiased manner.
· Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
· Demonstrated tact, insight, and leadership skills in the garden context.
· Effective listening skills and the ability to calmly handle crisis situations.
· Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior challenges in a garden setting.
· Successful collaboration with culturally diverse staff and club members.
· Respect for members and their environmental stewardship efforts.
· Possess or be willing to obtain a Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certification.
· Possess or be willing to obtain a Master Gardener Certification.
· Possess or be willing to obtain a Class E Driver’s License.
