- We are looking to hire two (2) Directors of Development, one to focus on our sites in Brookings, Elkton, and Moody County, and one to focus on our sites in Vermillion and Yankton.
MISSION: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
JOB SUMMARY:
We are looking for a proactive, detail-oriented, and passionate Director of Development who is enthusiastic about our organization’s mission and understands the importance this work has in driving change in our communities. The Director of Development is responsible for planning and executing comprehensive fundraising initiatives, with a particular focus on cultivating relationships and soliciting gifts up to $25,000 from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Working directly with the Chief Development Officer, this position plays a key role in expanding the organization’s donor base and ensuring long-term financial support. The Director of Development collaborates with local advisory councils, community leaders, and staff to align fundraising efforts with the mission of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains, Inc. (serving Brookings, Elkton, Flandreau, Vermillion, and Yankton).
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership & Fundraising Strategy
- Contribute to both the Development and Corporate teams by providing strategic vision and direction for fundraising efforts across all Club units.
- Lead the implementation and follow-up of annual individual and business giving campaigns in Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains (BGCNP) units.
- Assist in the development and execution of the annual Resource Development and Marketing Plan, including calendar planning for fundraising initiatives.
- Represent the organization at community events and in appropriate organizations as approved by the Chief Development Officer.
- Collaborate with the Resource Development team to prepare engaging marketing materials, such as direct mail pieces, brochures, and donor newsletters.
Donor Cultivation & Solicitation
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with current and prospective donors, including individuals, businesses, foundations, and advisory councils across BGCNP units.
- Directly solicit and secure gifts up to $25,000 from individuals, corporations, and sponsorships.
- Develop a portfolio of mid-level donors, implementing personalized engagement strategies to maximize giving potential.
- Work closely with the Chief Development Officer and Resource Development team on donor stewardship plans, ensuring thoughtful recognition and follow-up for all donors.
- Support efforts to cultivate planned giving and legacy gifts, fostering long-term donor relationships.
- Participate in donor meetings, site visits, and other face-to-face interactions to build relationships and increase financial support.
Administrative & Data Management
- Generate development reports, donor profiles, case statements, and proposals for donor outreach and stewardship purposes.
- Manage and maintain online donations and donor management systems, ensuring accurate records for BGCNP units.
- Oversee donor database management, providing regular reports on donor engagement and campaign progress.
- Ensure the timely distribution of mailings, emails, and stewardship communications to donors.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, or a related field from an accredited university.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fundraising, donor relations, or related fields, with proven success in securing gifts of up to $25,000.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with donors, volunteers, and stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and donor database systems (e.g., Salesforce, DonorPerfect, Raiser’s Edge, etc.).
- Ability to prioritize, take initiative, and work independently while contributing as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of fundraising techniques, donor cultivation strategies, and nonprofit funding sources.
- Experience with social media management and online fundraising tools is a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be of the mental and physical capacity to observe, interact, and communicate with youth, staff, volunteers, parents etc. at the Club.
- This position is considered to be safety-sensitive.
