Job Summary
The After School Driver, under direct supervision of the Clubhouse Manager, is responsible for providing transportation services for youth using Club vans in a safe manner. The After School Program Driver will primarily transport Club members in a professional and responsible way, from target schools to branch sites, effectively maintain the highest level of safety, and assist with the loading and unloading of van passengers. The After School Program Driver is responsible for safely operating the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego vehicles/van, transporting Club members in a professional and responsible way, and represents self as a positive, caring, respectful role model for Club members and general public.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interact and effectively deal with parents, guardians, school personnel, and community members in a positive, courteous and respectful manner.
  • Transports members over required route(s) to proper destination(s) ensuring safe passage of Cub members to and from designated locations.
  • Ensure safe passage of Club members to and from designated location.
  • Operate vehicle/van in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant and applicable driving laws and rules of conduct.
  • Keep Clubhouse Manager informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance.
  • Demonstrate sound work ethics in accordance with standards identified in the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Code of Ethics.

Safety:

  • Communicate any concerns or safety issue to supervisor.
  • Deals effectively with member needs, supervising members entering, leaving, and while being transported on assigned routes.
  • Take attendance; ensure only approved members ride the bus.
  • Ensure members are safely seated and use safety buckles appropriately.
  • Ensure members adhere to the rules of conduct and show respect for others and equipment.
  • Follow all safety standards; follow safety procedures for vehicle operation.
  • Follow and abide by all traffic rules and laws.
  • Monitor and supervise safety and behavior of members.
  • Maintain and ensure an organized and clean appearance of the vehicles/vans at all times.
  • Performs required pre & post trip inspection and forms.
  • Reports any maintenance malfunctions to the Club House Manager.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate reports, including mileage, attendance, safety checks, defect reports and incident reports as required.
  • Adheres to established routes and times, adjusting as necessary when members are added or removed from pickup/delivery schedule.
  • Make independent judgements, within stated objectives and guidelines, regarding unusual traffic/road conditions, and the proper course of action to take.
  • Assure vehicles are maintained, fluids filled and fuel is at least ½ tank at all times

Club Experience:

  • Maintain a positive club culture and setting that insures the physical and emotional safety of members.
  • Work with team members in assuring the needs of Club members are met.
  • Attend staff meetings, classes or trainings as required and/or requested.
  • Work in collaboration with program supervisors, mangers, directors, and Administrative Staff

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent with the experience, knowledge, and skills to safely operate a passenger van/vehicle.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid CA driver’s license and insurable driving record to drive Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito vehicles.
  • Clean Motor Vehicle Report (Three (3) or more traffic violations and/or at fault accidents over a three (3) year period will disqualify a driver).
  • Applicants under 21 must have a minimum of 3 years driving experience and have a clean MVR.
  • Must be insurable by BGC San Dieguito insurance carrier.
  • Must have or be available to obtain CPR and First Aid certification (will train).
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and background clearance.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with youth in a youth-serving organization desirable.

Knowledge, skills and ability:

  • Prior experience and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with young people, parents, volunteers and community leaders.
  • Ability to operate Club van/vehicle in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Passenger service skills and public interaction skills.
  • Ability to maintain patience in the face of adversity.
  • Ability to read and write to records pickups and maintain daily records.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate youth and demonstrate compassion, respect and empathy with youth.  Provide excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Club’s philosophy, mission and goals.
  • Understand and uphold organizational policies and procedures.

Relationships:

Internal- Maintains close, daily contact with Club professional staff (professional and volunteer) to interpret and explain organizational mission, program objectives, standards and guidelines. Discuss issues, provide/receive information, advise/counsel youth. Maintains contact with Branch Boards as needed. Has regular contact with members.

External- With the guidance from the Clubhouse Manager, maintains public relations to increase the visibility of programs, services and activities within the Club and the community. Positively represent BGC San Dieguito through all community interactions.

This job operates in a youth center environment.   • The work environment indoors in a temperature controlled space. The noise level is quiet or minimal. During program hours noise levels can increase due to a large number of children in one area and/or rentals using various tools or instruments. During summer hours temperatures outside can be uncomfortable.

Language Skills:

Must possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to create, proofread and edit correspondence and written materials. Must be able to project a positive company image, interact professionally with customers, vendors, retailers, all levels of company management and maintain confidentiality at all times.

Mathematical Skills:

Must possess basic math skills include ng the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers accurately as well as the ability to calculate percentages.

Mental Demands:

Must possess excellent organizational skills, including the ability to handle multiple duties and priorities simultaneously in a fast paced environment. Strong analytical skills, follow-through skills, attention to details and ability to produce work with a high degree of accuracy required.

  • Sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • Utilize various office machines such as a fax and photo copy machine.
  • Must be able to travel off site to visit various club locations as well as conduct outreach efforts.
  • Frequently lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job including peripheral vision.
  • This positon requires the ability to perform work in an office setting as well as in a highly interactive and emotionally and physically stimulating environment.
