JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE:                   Transportation Director

 

REPORTS TO:         District Operations Manager

 

SUPERVISE:           Supervise and evaluate performance of drivers and transportation secretary.

 

Nature and Scope of Job

Brandon Valley School District is one of the fastest growing school districts in South Dakota.  It consists of 128 square miles on the eastern side of South Dakota with a student population of over 4,200.  More than 2,000 students are bused twice a day with a district-owned fleet consisting of over thirty buses and multiple smaller passenger vehicles. 

 

We are seeking a Transportation Director for the management of the district’s transportation program - ensuring safe and efficient operation of this department.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a job-related area is preferred but not required
  • Two years related management experience – routing knowledge a plus
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence of assigned responsibilities
  • Equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Shall be 21 years of age
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B, with school bus, passenger and air brake endorsements or the ability to obtain one
  • Ability to pass random, federally mandated, drug and alcohol screenings to maintain a Class B CDL
  • Ability to successfully complete School Bus Driver Physical [DOT Physical] certifying medical ability to perform essential functions of position, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • No Drug or Alcohol related charges for five [5] years from the date of application
  • Successful completion and subsequent approval of the State of South Dakota’s required background investigation
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Routes and Schedule

  • Prepare and update bus routes and schedules for all schools within the district and develop plans to meet future transportation needs
  • Recommend route changes due to population shifts and/or growth
  • Coordinate transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed
  • Operate and deliver buses to drivers when breakdowns occur
  • Notify bus drivers, schools, and public of any changes in bus routes and schedules

Policy, Reports, and Laws

  • Implement state and federal statutes as well as Board of Education policies in transportation area
  • Compile, maintain, file, and present all reports, records, and other documents as necessary
  • Implement district’s student discipline policies and communicate to students expected behavior when using district transportation
  • Enforce safety standards that conform to state, federal, and insurance regulations
  • Develop training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation of transportation department
  • Comply with applicable personnel policies
  • Prepare data necessary to process transportation payroll, including the maintenance and review of timecards and vouchers

Student Management

  • Review student behavior reports and conduct conferences with parents, students, and drivers on disciplinary issues when necessary
  • Enforce student discipline and suspension of riding privileges in accordance with Board Policy
  • Monitor video surveillance

Personnel

  • Assign bus drivers to routes and find substitutes as needed. Cover routes as necessary
  • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate transportation personnel and make sound recommendations about placement, assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal
  • Prepare, process, and maintain all documents required to verify safety certification and alcohol and drug testing of bus drivers

Safety

  • Advise administration about inclement weather or road hazards that may impact school operations
  • Determine drivability of district roads due to road construction or other hazards and determine alternate routes as necessary
  • Help with gathering information in investigations of school bus accidents and student safety violations
  • Help organize and conduct training programs to promote a safe work environment

Other

  • Keep informed of new regulations and developments in the bussing industry
  • Attend professional growth activities to keep abreast of innovative techniques in transportation
  • Work with Administration in resolving transportation issues
  • Make recommendations for improvement in the effectiveness and efficiency of the transportation operations of the district
  • Notify and assist the administration and appropriate emergency personnel with any emergency and potentially dangerous or unusual situations
  • Display ethical and professional behavior
  • Ensure day to day compliance with District Policies, including safety, training and positive patron communication
  • Work with district patrons regarding routing and disciplinary concerns
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Occasional district-wide travel; Occasional prolonged and irregular hours

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Twelve (12) Months. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job is to be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of support services personnel.

 

SALARY RANGE:

TBD by the Board of Education

 

 The Brandon Valley School District offers a competitive salary and complete benefit package including health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, retirement and vacation.  Employment will consist of a twelve-month full-time position
