Job Description
An Industrial Engineer (Material Flow) is responsible for analyzing and optimizing the movement of materials within a manufacturing facility, focusing on designing efficient workflows, minimizing bottlenecks, and maximizing production efficiency by utilizing data-driven methods to design layouts, implement material handling systems, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline material flow throughout the production process.
Key responsibilities may include :
- Process analysis and optimization : Conduct time studies, identify inefficiencies, and develop improvements to material flow processes, including receiving, storage, transportation, and delivery to production lines.
- Layout design : Design and implement optimal factory layouts to minimize material movement distances and optimize space utilization, considering equipment placement and workflow considerations.
- Material handling system design : Select and implement appropriate material handling equipment like conveyors, robots, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), autonomous mobile robots (AMR), and other systems to streamline material flow.
- Inventory control : Analyze inventory levels and optimize buffer stock to ensure smooth production flow while minimizing excess inventory.
- Simulation and modeling : Utilize simulation software to model material flow processes, identify potential bottlenecks, and test proposed improvements before implementation.
- Data analysis : Collect and analyze production data to identify trends, measure performance metrics (like cycle time, throughput), and monitor process effectiveness.
- Cross-functional collaboration : Work closely with production teams, supply chain, engineering, and quality control to ensure alignment and smooth integration of material flow processes.
