Job Overview
Breakthrough MHWC is seeking a Substance Abuse Counselor to provide therapeutic and support services to individuals struggling with addiction and substance use disorders. This role involves conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and guiding clients through their recovery journey using various therapeutic techniques. Counselors work closely with clients to set goals, identify triggers, and build coping strategies, ensuring comprehensive support toward sustained sobriety and wellness.
Key Responsibilities:
Assess Client Needs:
- Conduct intake assessments to evaluate clients' substance use history, mental health status, and personal circumstances.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment results and collaborative goal-setting with the client.
Provide Counseling and Support:
- Lead individual and group counseling sessions to help clients understand the causes of their substance use and build skills for sobriety.
- Utilize therapeutic techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and relapse prevention strategies.
- Support clients in developing coping skills, improving self-esteem, and building resilience.
Create and Monitor Treatment Plans:
- Track and document client progress, adapting treatment plans as needed.
- Collaborate with other professionals, such as social workers, physicians, and psychologists, to create a comprehensive care plan.
Educate and Support Families:
- Involve family members in the recovery process by providing education on addiction, offering resources, and facilitating family counseling sessions as needed.
Crisis Intervention:
- Respond to clients in immediate crisis situations, providing support and appropriate referrals to emergency services if necessary.
Community Resource Coordination:
- Assist clients in accessing community resources such as sober housing, vocational training, and social services to support recovery.
Ensure Compliance and Confidentiality:
- Maintain client records and documentation in accordance with HIPAA and agency standards.
- Stay informed of legal regulations affecting substance abuse counseling and practice within ethical guidelines.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Certification: Master's Degree preferred. Must hold valid State of Maryland Licensure or Credential that allows for practice of Drug and Alcohol Counseling (ADT, CAC-AD, CSC-AD, LGADC, LCADC, LGPC, LCPC, LMSW, LCSW, LSCW-C).
- Experience: 1-3 years of experience working with clients in a substance abuse or mental health setting.
- Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, crisis intervention capabilities, and knowledge of addiction recovery strategies.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems for documentation and reporting.
This role is crucial for supporting individuals in overcoming substance use disorders, helping them establish and maintain sobriety through structured counseling and compassionate, patient-centered care.
