We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with criminal histories as they transform their lives, while also working to alter the community’s perception of the incarcerated population. Our holistic approach includes an in-facility career education program, community engagement, re-entry support, a fair opportunity hiring program, and criminal justice advocacy initiatives.
Our in-facility program teaches career readiness and character development through an evidence-based curriculum, with the latter half of the program focusing on fostering an entrepreneurial mindset during which participants create business ideas. Community members are welcomed into the facility to serve as volunteer coaches. Post-release, staff connect participants to wraparound services and maintain weekly contact for the first month of re-entry. Additionally, our Fair Opportunity Employment project recruits fair opportunity partners and develops resources to support fair opportunity hiring practices. POSITION SUMMARY
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for developing and managing a robust network of volunteers to support Breakthrough’s programs and events. This role oversees all aspects of the volunteer lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, engagement, retention, and appreciation. Working closely with the Director of Business Development & Community Engagement and the Operations Manager, the Volunteer Coordinator ensures that volunteer systems, communications, and events run seamlessly, creating meaningful experiences for both volunteers and program participants.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement
Develop and implement a recruitment strategy to fill 400 volunteer roles annually using social media, newsletters, community outreach, and presentations.
Represent Breakthrough at community events to recruit and inspire potential volunteers.
Plan and oversee volunteer cultivation events to foster engagement and retention.
Facilitate ongoing communication with volunteers, including updates, opportunities, and recognition efforts.
Utilize volunteer feedback to develop strategies for appreciation and engagement, ensuring a meaningful volunteer experience.
Build and maintain strong relationships with community organizations and stakeholders to expand volunteer recruitment and partnership opportunities.
Volunteer Management and Support
Leverage data systems to manage the volunteer process from recruitment through post-volunteer follow-up, ensuring accuracy and quality of records.
Maintain and organize volunteer records, including paperwork, communication tracking, and database updates.
Provide day-of event support, including set-up, volunteer coordination, and participant assistance (e.g., supporting families at graduation events).
Collaborate with staff to ensure adequate presence and support at volunteer-related events.
Relationship and Stakeholder Management
Act as the primary liaison with the Department of Corrections (DOC) for volunteer-related matters.
Collaborate with staff to support donor and volunteer thank-you processes, ensuring timely and thoughtful communication.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Minimum Qualifications :
Understanding of the criminal justice system, with the ability to align solutions with Breakthrough’s strategic vision.
Proven experience in volunteer recruitment and management.
Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Proficient in data management systems and tools for tracking volunteer information and engagement.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, effective in one-on-one and group settings.
Self-starter with the ability to take initiative and build internal capacity through replicable processes.
Resourceful and innovative, with a clear understanding of the limited resources of a non-profit organization.
Determined and adaptable, with the ability to overcome obstacles to achieve goals.
Confident in sharing ideas and challenging others constructively to drive the organization’s mission.

Preferred Qualifications :
Experience providing day-of support at events, including coordinating logistics and addressing volunteer needs.

While formal education is not required, a relevant educational background that enhances the role’s responsibilities is preferred.
TRAVEL
Breakthrough’s office is located in a coworking space in downtown Denver (2130 Arapahoe Street, Denver, CO 80205). Staff operate under a hybrid model, working remotely and in person. Staff are expected to work from the office at least three days per week.
The Volunteer Coordinator will also travel to most in-prison events (approximately 10-15 annually) from Denver to Cañon City, Ordway, and Pueblo. These events often involve overnight travel, requiring advance planning. Travel typically occurs with the team in a rental car, and all travel costs will be reimbursed.
COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is $55,000-60,000 annually, which is competitive with similarly sized, professionally managed non-profits. Breakthrough provides health care, dental, vision, life insurance, and disability leave benefits.
