The Equestrian Technician will be responsible for direct supervision, staffing and scheduling of stable hands, schooling staff, and part-time laborers. Will coordinate with maintenance staff in the preparation and maintenance of horse stalls, barns, pastures, arenas, and other equestrian activity sites. This individual is responsible for observing and detecting illnesses and injuries in horses, reporting findings to the Equestrian Manager, and providing basic routine maintenance and medical care to horses as required or instructed.Education Required: H.S. diploma or equivalent .
Preferred: Graduation from an accredited 4 year college or university.
Area of Study (major) Preferred: Equine studies, animal science or related science.
License(s) Required: Valid LA driver's license.
Years Relevant Work Experience: 2 years experience in a supervisory capacity.
Preferred: 10 or more years related experience, at least 3 years full-time at BREC

- Knowledge of medication and symptoms of drug reactions is required.
- Ability to quickly react in emergency situations dealing with horse injury/illness is required.
- Ability to operate job related tools and equipment is required.
- Ability to assess animal health, quality of hay, feed and bedding and proper housing of horses is required.
- Ability to organize, direct, and supervise staff is required.
- Good interpersonal skills are required for good teamwork.
- Ability to work flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends for programs or events.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, staff, volunteers, patrons, BREC officials, community interest groups, and the general public.
- Ability to quickly learn BREC policies and procedures and Programs.
- Monitors horse health daily and performs medical treatments ordered on BREC horses.
- Maintains computer databases for BREC horse’s health including farrier care and veterinarian care.
- Distributes and administers appropriate medications and vaccinations under direction of the Veterinarian.
- Oversee cleaning stalls and other areas to remove horse manure and solid bedding to stockpile area.
- Oversee cleaning and disinfecting feed and water troughs as needed.
- Collaborate with maintenance and program staff in preparing and maintaining arenas and grounds for shows, lessons, events, programs, and other riding activities.
- Oversees preparing and maintaining barns and stalls for shows, boarders, BREC horses and overnight boarders.
- Engage staff and participates in removing all trash and debris from facility grounds to preserve safety and aesthetics of park.
- Acts as the liaison to the Veterinarian and Farrier.
- Orders all supplies requred for the care of the horses: medications, supplements, wound care, farm supplies, etc.
- Acts as liaison with boarders in reference to the care of boarder horses.
- Notifies management of repair needs in all barns and pastures.
Secondary Job Duties
- Maintains feed and inventory.
- Assists in ensuring health and safety of horses and program participants according to Farr Equestrian Center policies and procedures.
- Places all feed orders.
- Transports horses to and from facility as necessary.
- Provides evaluation and recommendations to management team on fitness of horses for BREC equestrian program.
