The Director of Recreation has full accountability for implementing the strategic plan and establishing the direction of all recreational programs and activities of the department. This executive level position is responsible for planning, developing and administering broad recreational policies and procedural improvements throughout the department. Prepares departmental budget, mid-year and annual reports, establishes and develops recreational policies, attends meetings, advises the Asst. Superintendent and Superintendent on compliance of relevant legislation. Building sustainable relationships that work together to deliver quality recreational programs parish wide.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Education Required: Graduation from an accredited 4 year college or university.Education Preferred: Master's degree from an accredited college or university. Area of Study (Major) Required: Recreation Management or closely related or closely related field. Certification(s) Required: Professional membership w/ LRPA or NRPA. Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) through national Recreation & Parks Association.Certification(s) Preferred: Professional membership w/ LRPA or NRPA. Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) through national Recreation & Parks Association. License(s) Required: Valid LA driver’s license. Must be able to obtain a valid LA driver's license within 60 days of hire. Years Relevant Work Experience: Six years in municipal parks & recreation field with 4 years in supervisory capacity. Equivalent combination of education and experience. Years Relevant Work Experience Preferred: 10 or more years related experience, at least 3 years full-time at BREC;Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of fiscal management and budget developmentThorough knowledge of all phases of recreation, facility programming & facility managementLeadership & interpersonal skills with ability to develop & maintain effective working relations with departmental staff & to relate well to representatives of public & private interest groups, & officials of other agenciesAbove average math skills to deal with reporting and budgetProven administrative, leadership, and management ability in strategic planning and organizational developmentAbility to prepare budget forecastAbility to communicate effectively in person, writing, and over the telephone; to research, analyze and interpret complex information and produce clear verbal and written reportsAbility to plan and supervise subordinatesAbility to effectively listen to and assist in the resolution of complaintsAbility to write, edit, and produce documentary materials for print media and related publicity materials
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Minimum eight-hour days, five days per week; evening and weekend hours as required. The Director of Recreation is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the event of emergencies.Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of a completed application.
