What are the responsibilities and job description for the Payroll Accountant position at Brevard County Sheriff's Office?
The purpose of the class is to perform accounting and budgetary functions and financial management reporting in conformance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and budgetary guidelines. The class is responsible for preparation, disbursement, maintenance, review, and reconciliation of assigned areas of accounting and payroll. Work includes the exercise of considerable judgment in assisting in planning, installing, revising and maintaining accounting and payroll procedures and in the preparation of paychecks, statements and reports. Work requires considerable proficiency with, and the ability to learn and efficiently utilize sophisticated computer application software, including development of customized spreadsheets, reporting, and database applications. The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional related tasks as necessary.
Work is primarily completed during normal business hours; Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm; however, some work outside of these hours is expected and is not uncommon at certain times within each month and the year as business conditions and deadlines require. Some overtime will be required.
During an emergency,the Sheriff will determine who is considered an emergency responder and whose work is necessary to maintain the operation of law enforcement and correctional facilities. This determination is subject to change based on staffing and the operational needs of the agency.
Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, reference/employment/neighborhood checks. submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to assuming position and will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.

- Prepare, examine, and reconcile payroll and accounting records, financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and procedural standards.
- Prepare and post G/L entries, reconcile general ledger balances to detail journal or supporting information, record general journal entries and run or prepare payroll reports.
- Prepare periodic payroll and accounting reports and adjustments.
- Monitor, maintain and reconcile payroll bank accounts and positive pay bank files, resolving any discrepancies.
- Prepare grant reimbursement requests.
- Assist Financial Auditors with financial and technical support for annual or special audits.
- Perform internal audit functions as assigned.
- Prepare routine and special reports and other special projects as assigned.
- File and maintain records in compliance with the Document Retention Policy.
- Assists customers and co-workers in a friendly manner with issues in person, via phone and/or email.
- Provide support to the Finance Director and other unit staff by researching payroll variances, assisting with documenting policies and procedures, assisting with grant administration and/or special projects, researching financial records, drafting correspondence, and other duties as assigned.
- Provide regular recurring support and assistance posting and monitoring Off-Duty details across the agency, including evening and weekend support as needed.
- Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting or Finance.
- A minimum of three years of experience performing payroll processing, timekeeping functions, payroll reconciling and accounting related functions.
- Experience above the minimum requirement may substitute for required education. We will evaluate all education and relevant experience.
- Experience in governmental accounting is preferred as well as experience working with ADG software.
- Valid Driver's License
