What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Accountant position at Brewer Morris?
Senior Fuel Tax Accountant
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking a Senior Fuel Tax Accountant who brings a strong foundation in general accounting, along with some exposure to tax processes — ideally related to fuel tax or other indirect taxes. This role offers a unique opportunity for an experienced accountant to step into a specialized area while leveraging their broader accounting skill set. The primary focus will be on supporting the fuel tax operations team, ensuring accurate financial reporting, reconciliations, and compliance across multiple jurisdictions. This role also includes coordinating with offshore teams, conducting data analysis, and supporting tax filings, but does not require a deeply specialized tax background.
This is an excellent role for a well-rounded accountant who enjoys problem-solving, process improvement, and collaborating across departments while gaining deeper exposure to tax compliance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support and help oversee monthly fuel tax filings, working alongside both onshore and offshore teams to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Assist with preparation and submission of fuel tax returns, focusing on accuracy in reporting and reconciliation with the general ledger.
- Conduct reconciliations between fuel tax transactions and general ledger accounts during each fiscal period.
- Analyze fuel-related financial data to support accurate reporting and identify discrepancies proactively.
- Research and respond to federal, state, and local tax notices, collaborating with internal teams as needed.
- Use ERP systems and tax software tools, such as Avalara, to support automated reporting and compliance tracking.
- Partner closely with the Fuel Accounting Department to ensure consistent and accurate financial reporting across all fuel-related activities.
- Collaborate on fuel tax audits, assisting with document requests, data gathering, and analysis.
- Stay informed on relevant tax regulations, but with a primary focus on accurate accounting, reconciliation processes, and data integrity.
- Contribute to process improvements, identifying ways to streamline reporting, filing, and reconciliation workflows.
- Provide ad hoc accounting and reporting support to the broader fuel tax and accounting teams.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field preferred (equivalent experience will be considered).
- 1-5 years of relevant experience in accounting, with some exposure to tax or compliance processes (prior fuel tax experience is a plus, but not required).
- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, and data analysis) and basic proficiency in Microsoft Word.
- Experience with ERP systems and tax software platforms such as PDI or Avalara is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a detail-oriented mindset.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work across departments.
- Comfortable working in a team-oriented environment with both onshore and offshore colleagues.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
