Job Description
Academic & Admissions Advisor
This position provides academic and admissions advisement to prospective and current, FlexGE, Bachelor of General Studies (BGS), Visiting Students (VS), concurrent high school, and post-baccalaureate students. This position provides comprehensive support for these students, many of whom are at a distance. This includes responding to initial requests; admitting students to the program; helping them set and achieve academic goals; providing ongoing motivation, direction, and support; and helping them prepare for graduation. This position also carries out daily department operations and special assignments such as participating in the FlexGE and/or BGS financial assistance committee and gathering information from BGS capstone submissions for program assessments. Requires work in both Provo and Salt Lake.

What You’ll Do In This Position
Academic Advisement
- Provides academic advisement consistent with the standards and expectations set by national organizations and BYU advisement councils. Advises prospective students (and their family members) considering admission to FlexGE or BGS including admission criteria for domestic and international students, Honor Code expectations, and other educational opportunities more suited to the student circumstances, e.g., Salt Lake Center, Bachelor of General Studies, Independent Study, or BYU Pathway, local community college or university.
- Advises students admitted to CE Classroom Programs (and their family members) about academic assistance, guidance through the registration procedures, exploration of career goals, informal credit transfer analysis, and other capacities related to the BYU advisement mission.
- Ensures quality and currency of advisement regarding curriculum, transfer planning, admission, development of educational plans consistent with students’ life and career goals.
- Determine students’ eligibility for admissions into the, FlexGE, BGS, or VS programs.
- Determine if one of the FlexGE, BGS, Visiting Student programs is a good fit for students’ educational and career goals.
- Assist students working to become eligible to the program in creating a plan for admissions (including those on BYU academic warning, probation, dismissal)
- Process student registration eligibility annually.
- Produce and send necessary letters, flyers, and emails to students.
- Maintain student files and records.
- Work with Graduation Evaluation, Transfer Office, and college advisement centers in efficiently filling course requirements with substitutions and transfer courses.
- Participate in Division of Continuing Education and University committees involving advisement and student issues.
- Recommend office policies and procedures to be in compliance with university regulations.
- Chair or participate in financial assistance committees and scholarship award processes
- Assist program administrator with training and supervision of student advisors.
- Act as backup for the other full-time staff advisors and program administrator.
What qualifies you for this role:
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
- Bachelor’s degree and 2 years advisement or other relevant experience OR
- Advisement certification (or equivalent graduate coursework)
- Master’s degree
