Job Summary
An adjunct faculty position is available beginning in fall semester, 2025 to teach Biogeochemistry -PWS 365, 1 section, 3 credit hours, about 50 students, MWF 12:00 – 12:50 p.m.
Based on interest and qualifications, there may also be an option to also teach Biogeochemistry Laboratory-PWS 366, 1 section, 1 credit hour, about 50 students, M 2:00-4:50 p.m.
These courses are required, mid-level courses for students majoring in Environmental Science and Sustainability. There is some flexibility in course content and delivery, as long as the key learning objectives are met.
Essential Functions
- Provide an enriching and supportive classroom environment where students can successfully fulfill the following course outcomes:
- Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of biogeochemistry, with focus on cycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur in aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric systems
- Understand microbial-mediated transformations of nutrients, organic pollutants, and heavy metals and how these affect environmental health and quality.
- Be able to articulate how disturbances in natural and urbanizing soils and water affect nutrient cycling.
- Practice using the scientific method to better understand plant-environment interactions
- Improve skills in data analysis and in verbal and written communication
- Plan and direct active learning approaches where students apply principles learned in the course.
- Coordinate with teaching assistant to oversee grading and student evaluation, including assignments, exams, and quizzes related to the courses.
- Submit grades prior to the grade submittal deadline at the end of respective semesters.
Minimum education/experience required
MS in Environmental Science that includes relevant teaching experience. A commitment to excellence in teaching students from diverse backgrounds.

Excellent leadership and training skills to communicate effectively with students and teaching assistants.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work well with faculty and students.
Understanding curriculum and assessment design for effective learning in a higher education biology setting.
Ability to fairly evaluate student work.
