Job Description

The Museum Educator

Family Programs and Student Coordinator position will provide leadership in the development, administration, and promotion of programs and services for the effective enhancement of the Museum learning experience for various museum audiences. Specifically, this position will initiate and execute programs relating to family audiences and children. The position will work in close cooperation with curators and other museum departments to write curriculum resources and interpretive material for exhibitions and collections. This position will also aid in recruiting, training, and supervising student employees and interns as well as museum docents and volunteers. Additionally, this person will be called upon to carry out special projects for the Head of Museum Education department.

What You’ll Do In This Position

  • Serve as the primary educator for 2-3 exhibitions annually, collaborating with curators, designers, and other staff.
  • Develop and implement educational materials, interactive elements, and programming, such as guest lectures, panel discussions, and family activities.
  • Manage the hiring of student educators and interns for the Museum Education department
  • Train and mentor student educators, docents, and interns, including creating training materials and coordinating schedules.
  • Design and evaluate family and community programs, ensuring alignment with museum goals and audience needs.
  • Track and report visitor engagement and program success, updating training materials and procedures as needed.
  • Edit educational content for exhibitions, publications, and promotional materials.
  • Research and apply education theory to enhance museum learning experiences for university, K-12, and family audiences.
  • Maintain professional development by attending seminars, contributing to scholarship, and staying current in educational practices.
  • Support museum operations, including serving on committees and performing other assigned duties.

Required

What qualifies you for this role:

  • Master’s degree in art history, art education, education, or a related field, with 2 years of experience in an art museum or art education setting.
  • Proven experience in museum learning theory, curriculum development, and pedagogy for adults, university, and family audiences.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend work as needed.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in art history, art education, education, or a related field, with 4 years of experience in an art museum or art education setting.
  • Proven expertise in developing and writing educational materials and applying museum education principles.
  • Strong verbal, teaching, and writing skills with the ability to mentor student employees and interns.
  • Experience collaborating with museum professionals, educators, and university faculty.
  • Knowledge of museum resources and ability to engage family audiences effectively.
  • Proficiency with technology and online resources for museum education.
  • Ability to provide program leadership, including vision, strategy, and evaluation.
  • Commitment to public service and responsiveness to emerging issues in museum education.

Compensation Range

Actual compensation based on education and experience

$58,656.00 - $74,426.00
