Overview:
The Lead Authorization Specialist oversees a team of Authorization Specialists within the Billing Services department. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely insurance authorizations, monitoring expiring contracts, and maintaining compliance with industry regulations. Additionally, this position participates in special projects and organizational initiatives as assigned.
Position Goals and Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary resource for documentation requirements, signatures, and issue resolution related to authorizations.
- Lead the team in monitoring expiring contracts and authorizations, ensuring timely renewal with insurance carriers.
- Ensure the accurate and efficient entry of insurance authorizations into the billing system.
- Oversee the team’s regular communication with BCBAs, providing treatment plan updates and authorization deadlines.
- Manage timely referral submissions to physicians for necessary signatures.
- Oversee and track the authorization team’s attendance logs as required by payors.
- Ensure all insurance authorizations are properly obtained and approved before services are rendered.
- Maintain proactive communication with insurance companies to confirm authorization for scheduled services.
- Identify and report authorization trends and billing-related issues impacting reimbursement.
- Verify the accuracy and completeness of all submitted insurance documentation.
- Ensure that all electronic medical records (EMR) are properly stored and organized.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the authorization team.
- Accept feedback and demonstrate a willingness to implement new or modified policies.
- Utilize effective time management skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills for team collaboration and external communication.
- Adhere to organizational policies, procedures, and compliance requirements.
- Work from the assigned job location during standard business hours.
- Attend required meetings and training sessions.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Position Qualifications and Credentials
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) preferred.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations and healthcare compliance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment and implement feedback.
- Strong team collaboration skills and willingness to learn
