Clinical Laboratory Scientist

Job Summary:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist prepares specimens for analysis; performs and reports waived, moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory procedures under the supervision of the laboratory supervisors and the direction of the department director, section heads and/or technical/clinical consultants for performance of designated waived, moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory procedures required for clinical and research purposes under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988, CFR Section 493. Meets the qualifications to perform these procedures under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988, CFR Section 493 and requirements established by this department and the State of California. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs and documents quality control and equipment/instrument maintenance procedures. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist provides technical support in fulfilling departmental objectives.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Inoculates, cultivates, identifies and determines the antibiotic susceptibility of clinical specimens in order to provide data on cause, cure and prevention of infectious diseases.
- Prepares and interprets smears for the direct detection of bacteria, fungus, parasites, and viruses in clinical specimens and culture.
- Performs a variety of complex laboratory tests and procedures according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules. Utilizes standard laboratory equipment and records and checks results for completeness and accuracy.
- Cross-trains through other sections within department. Develops and maintains skills in order to provide coverage as assigned by the supervisor.
- Participates in proficiency testing and other quality check programs. May participate in research activities, investigate new products, equipment, techniques, and methodologies. Introduces, validates, demonstrates and recommends tests, procedures, and equipment as appropriate.
- Maintains the theoretical and procedural knowledge necessary to perform and interpret assigned procedures performed within the Laboratory.
- Practices quality control methods common to area of expertise. Prioritizes work and provides prompt and efficient service.
- Maintains a positive image when dealing with department personnel and other City of Hope employees.
- Performs data entry of diagnostic information.
Education, experience, and skills required for consideration:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- One-year experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a clinical microbiology laboratory setting.
Required Certification/Licensure:
- California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license, required
- MT(ASCP) or equivalent national certification, preferred

Pay: $45.00 - $55.00 per hour
