MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  1. Graduate of an accredited nursing program with license to practice as a registered nurse or LPN in Tennessee
  2. Current CPR/BLS certification
  3. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

REPORTS TO                       

 

Directly report to the principal of each school and indirectly report to the District Wide Health Services Coordinator

 

JOB GOAL                            

 

To provide needed healthcare services to students.

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Function in accordance with the Standards of Professional School Nursing Practice, the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Board of Nursing, and federal and state statutes governing nursing and school health services.
  2. Comply with all board policies, school rules, and administrative regulations.
  3. Coordinate in-school healthcare with the student’s health care provider(s) and otherproviders/staff as necessary and appropriate.
  4. Develop, implement, evaluate, and update the school health services program, in cooperation with medical professionals and administrative school personnel.
  5. Provide direct care to students according to licensure.
  6. Conduct and document nursing assessment and develop plans of care for students, as needed.
  7. Safely implement the plan of care/intervention either directly or by delegation.
  8. Evaluate the responses of students to nursing interventions and revise the plan of care if needed.
  9. Provide preventive health services to students including health education, screening, consultation, and referrals.
  10. Review health records, physical examinations, and immunization certificates, ensuring all requirements are met.
  11. Administer medications, procedures, treatments, etc. in accordance with medical orders provided by licensed medical provider.
  12. Assess and monitor students referred for illness or injury.
  13. Maintain a file of emergency telephone numbers or other ways to contact those in parental authority.
  14. Notify parents of serious injuries or illness.
  15. Provide supervision for sick or injured students until they are placed under their parent or guardian’s care.
  16. Refer students that require additional medical care to appropriate health care providers.
  17. Respond to emergency medical situations and safety concerns as necessary.
  18. Counsel students in good health habits and other health care related areas.
  19. Monitor students with chronic illnesses.
  20. May assist in program for care of disabled students.
  21. Act as a liaison between school staff, family, health care professionals, and the community.
  22. Maintain confidential and accurate student health records.
  23. Provide health-related training to school personnel.
  24. Collect and maintain data documenting special health considerations/conditions of all students and communicates this information with school administration and staff systematically and on a “need-to-know” basis.
  25. Cooperate with other school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students
  26. Report significant student injuries, accidents, or illness trends to the principal and health services coordinator.
  27. Assume responsibility for knowing and following the safety rules and proper procedures associated with the responsibilities of the job.
  28. Report to the principal when one knows or reasonably suspects a student’s health or welfare has been or appears to have been harmed as a result of abuse or neglect and reports to the Department of Children’s Services.
  29. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases and report as needed.
  30. Participates in 504 and IEP meetings as needed.
  31. Prepare and submit health services reports as needed.
  32. Represent the school, school system, and community in a positive manner.                                    
  33. Maintains confidentiality relative to employee, student, and parent records/information and procedures according to legal and district policy.
  34. May assist in collection, maintenance, and follow-up activities relative to attendance data.
  35. Perform other work-related duties as requested when nursing/clinic responsibilities are not required.
