Under direction of the Director of Operations, the Director of Transportation is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient transport of all Brockton Students for whom the District provides transportation. This position develops and administers a transportation system that meets the requirements of the instructional program and extracurricular activities. This position ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and local requirements. The Director oversees the provision of transportation services to students of the Brockton Public Schools. These services include yellow bus transportation for Brockton resident students; transportation of children with special needs, homeless students, students in foster care and students in other placements; transportation of Brockton resident students attending other local schools in the Brockton area and transportation of students participating in after school, athletic and extra-curricular activities
Essential Functions and Duties of the Position: The essential functions and duties listed below are intended as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. ●Responsible for program administration and operations oversight, including driver hiring and supervision, contract administration,
scheduling, routing, dispatching, rider registration, driver training, bus evacuation and safety programs, charter services, vehicle
maintenance and replacement, account management and billing. Assists with the development of the annual transportation
budget, in collaboration with the Brockton Public Schools’ Chief Financial Officer.
●Works collaboratively with school principals, directors, contract service providers, and public safety personnel to ensure that
services are delivered safely, efficiently and effectively; to monitor late bus/after-hours transportation activities; and to resolve
issues
and concerns to the satisfaction of school programs.
●Investigates and reports all incidents or accidents involving students on school transportation vehicles.
●Maintains a "hands on" and involved presence in day-to-day transportation operations.
●Ride school buses and vans to monitor system performance and routes.
●Participates in city-wide emergency preparedness planning and exercises
●Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of schedules, routes, stops, student assignments, accident reports, school bus
records, bus driver licenses, and project requirements.
●Prepares transportation reports, presentations and estimates, as required.
●Represents Brockton Public Schools in matters and at meetings concerning school transportation.
●Advises the Director of Operations and other program administrators of issues and concerns related to transportation.
●Assists the Director of Operations in the development of transportation policy.
●Supervises Transportation Department administrative support personnel.
●Strives for continual quality improvement of transportation services.
●Is available and on call daily for voice/text/email/radio communication during times that vehicles are in operation, from
approximately 6:30 am — 5:30 pm.
●Is available and on call at all times for Local Emergency Planning.
●Perform any other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or their designee and the Director of Operations.
●Preserves the confidentiality of student information.
Qualifications
•Minimum of three years’ experience in management of Pupil Transportation
•MBA or bachelor's degree in Transportation, Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, logistics, engineering,
operations, controls or a related field
•Working knowledge of federal and state pupil transportation laws and statutes, including Special Education statues and laws,
and the ability to project transportation future needs
•Diplomacy for communication with school officials, parents, and members of the community.
•Knowledge of automotive safety technology, GPS tracking, and navigation.
•Plan emergency preparedness program.
•Math computational skills to analyze data and create reports.
•Read, analyze and interpret information; ability to respond to and resolve customer inquiries or complaints; and ability to
effectively present information to senior management.
•Deliver highly effective verbal (in-person and telephone) and written communication and customer service, even in highly
stressful situations.
•Maintain a strong attention to detail and have the capacity to meet hard deadlines.
•Manage programs and people to operate the transportation program for the city.
•Ability to multitask. Must be accessible for up to 12 hours per day.
•Knowledge of human resources management to manage direct reports and write transportation policy.
Work Year and Daily Requirements:
Work year of 260 days.
Onsite presence from 7:00 am – 4:00 pm.
On call daily for voice/text/email/radio communication during times that vehicles are in operation, from approximately 6:30 am –
5:30 pm.
On call at all times for Local Emergency Planning.
Maintains staggered schedule with Transportation office staff to ensure full-time coverage during regular business hours.
Salary : $125,000 - $140,000
