General Statement of Duties Under the supervision of the Water Distribution/Wastewater Collection & Maintenance Supervisor, this position is responsible for the operation, inspection, and maintenance of the water distribution system, performs meter readings and
maintenance work. Assists with work efforts relating to wastewater collection. Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspects meters for defects, damage and unauthorized connections and makes necessary corrections and reports irregularities for necessary action.
- Install water meters on customer premises including remote registers and wires to meters.
- Tests, cleans, and repairs water meters.
- Maintains various records such as daily logbook of meters, maintenance book and curb stop location book.
- Install hydrant meters.
- Utilize company designated devices, equipment, and software platforms to record and maintain reports and records, including obtaining and recording spatial data related to the collection system.
- Taps, maintains, and repairs water mains and maintains and repairs fire hydrants.
- Installs and repairs valves and pipes.
- Assists wastewater collection personnel in maintaining wastewater manholes, collection lines, lift stations and generators, and plants.
- Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of assigned vehicle.
- Required to perform periodic stand-by duties as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education And/or Experience
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- An acceptable combination of training in a related field or possession of a Class I, II, or III Water Distribution Operator and/or Wastewater Collection & Maintenance certification.
- Possess mechanical aptitude and ability.
- Ability to compute simple mathematics.
- Ability to communicate and establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos presented either written or orally.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Must possess a South Dakota Class A CDL with a tanker endorsement within 180 days of hire.
- Possession of Class I, II, or III Water Distribution Operator and/or Wastewater Collection & Maintenance certification.
- Other such testing as deemed necessary by Brookings Municipal Utilities.
