FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Early Childhood and Art Education (ECAE) to start in August 2024.

The ECAE Department offers a range of academic programs, including undergraduate degrees in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood / EC Special Education, as well as graduate programs in Art Education (P-12), Early Childhood Education (with three specialized tracks), and Early Intervention and Parenting.

We proudly serve an ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse student body of around 800 individuals, with 70% identifying as students of color (Hispanic / Latino, 30%; White, 26%; African American, 20%; Asian American, 19%; 2% multiracial and other ethnic groups). Our course offerings include nearly 90 sections for the Spring or Fall semesters, comprising 50 plus graduate classes, 6 Art Education classes, and nearly 30 undergraduate classes, available in multiple modalities : in-person, hybrid, and online.

Currently, the ECAE Department is supported by a dedicated team of 8 full-time faculty members, including 7 specialists in Early Childhood / Early Childhood Special Education and 1 expert in Art Education.

We seek faculty who are committed to high quality early childhood education with the background and experience necessary for preparing future early childhood teachers to teach culturally, linguistically, and racially diverse student bodies. The faculty is expected to create a robust program of early childhood education research that speaks to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in early childhood settings, and educate early childhood teachers who can account for the sociopolitical context of New York City early childhood education. Our programs seek to empower these teachers to address the needs of children in our urban context in the United States, and we seek faculty who will contribute to continuing our alignment of ECEC courses with our School of Education’s Conceptual Framework (https : / / www.brooklyn.edu / soe / about-2 / framework / ) and Mission Statement (https : / / www.brooklyn.edu / soe / about-2 / ).

Responsibilities include : Provide leadership in the development of a growing dynamic Early Childhood Education program with an Early Childhood Bilingual Extension that integrates special education and aesthetic education across the curriculum. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in early childhood or early childhood multilingual education; develop and supervise clinically-rich field experiences (e.g., student teaching) in early childhood settings located in culturally and linguistically diverse and underserved communities; mentor and advise students; engage in an active research agenda; and serve on department and university committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Education or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Expertise in Early Childhood Education
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate Early Childhood courses is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background and experience in Early Childhood Multilingual Development / Education is preferred
  • Background and experience in supervising Student Teaching is preferred
  • Background and experience necessary for supporting diverse student groups and historically marginalized groups and affirming their full identities
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will not be offered for this position.

    COMPENSATION

    72,667 - $93,134; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
