Junior Accountant
Brooklyn Museum is seeking a solutions-driven Junior Accountant to support the finance team by maintaining financial records, preparing reports, and assisting with month-end close processes. This role requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a solid understanding of basic accounting principles. The Junior Accountant works under the supervision of the Accounting Manager, and may assist in a variety of accounting, financial, and administrative tasks. A typical day for this role might include updating the coding for incoming wire transactions, communicating with departmental colleagues on outstanding accounts receivables, meet with the Accounting team on a month end close workflow meeting. Responsibilities
Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with non-profit accounting standards (GAAP for non-profits)
Prepare journal entries to the general ledgerAssist with maintaining records for restricted and unrestricted fundsAccounts Payable & Receivable :Prepare accounts Payable and credit card entries from the expense management system for reviewMaintain accounts receivable processing including issuing invoices, applying receipts and working with management to facilitate collectionsMonitor incoming payments, including grants, memberships, and ticket sales, and reconcile them to appropriate accountsBank Reconciliation & Cash Management :Reconcile bank accounts, credit card statementsRecord and deposit receipts to the bank account, ensuring proper codingAssist with monitoring cash flow to ensure adequate liquidity for operationsFinancial Reporting :Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statementsAssist in creating reports for the board of directors, museum leadership, and grant fundersCompile and organize supporting documentation for audits or reviewsAssist in preparing grant financial reports and maintaining proper documentation for auditsCompliance & Documentation :Maintain accurate and organized financial records for internal and external stakeholdersAssist with maintaining the electronic files of the departmentAssist with maintaining the museums chart of accounts and mapping across various platformsMonth-End Close :Prepare reconciliations and adjustments for accounts, including prepaid expenses, deferred revenue, and accrued liabilitiesAssist with fixed asset tracking and depreciation schedules for museum collections and capital projectsOther Duties :Suggest process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial operationsOther duties as assignedQualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field from an accredited four-year college or university preferredAt least two years' experience, preferably at a nonprofit organization requiredExperience being a key person responsible for accounts receivable preferredTechnology savvy; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software particularly Abila MIP and Microsoft Office applications including advanced Excel skills.
