School Food Aide

Brooklyn RISE, a start-up, independent public K-6 charter school currently located in downtown Brooklyn. Brooklyn RISE was founded in Sunset Park and is in the process of building a permanent state-of-the-art facility in Sunset Park with an anticipated move date of Summer 2027. Our school opened in the fall of 2019 with kindergarten and first grade (two classes at each grade level). Brooklyn RISE adds a grade level each year until we are a fully enrolled K-8 charter school.

Job Summary:

The School Food Aide plays a critical role in ensuring that all students receive safe, healthy, and compliant meals every school day. This position is responsible for overseeing and managing the logistics of breakfast, snack, and lunch service. The School Food Aide will support with NYC School Food and ensure all cafeteria operations comply with New York State Department of Health regulations. This includes owning all inspections and audits, maintaining required documentation, and ensuring the meal service area is sanitary, safe, and welcoming for students. The School Food Aide sits on the Operations team and reports to the Director of Operations In Residence.

Core Responsibilities:

Meal Service & Cafeteria Management:

  • Oversee daily setup, serving, and cleanup of breakfast, lunch, and snack in accordance with Department of Health and NYC School Food standards.
  • Ensure timely arrival and proper storage of delivered food items.
  • Monitor food temperature and quality to ensure meals meet all health and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the meal service area throughout the day.
  • Set up the cafeteria and other meal service spaces daily, ensuring they are clean, safe, and welcoming.
  • Organize tables, trays, utensils, and trash stations to streamline meal service and student experience.

Compliance & Record-Keeping:

  • Ensure full compliance with New York State Department of Health and NYC School Food regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of meal counts, food temperatures, delivery logs, and cleaning schedules.
  • Prepare for and lead the school through inspections and audits from city and state agencies.
  • Keep detailed documentation to ensure successful audit outcomes and maintain school eligibility for food programs.
  • Monitor inventory of food service supplies and notify the appropriate personnel for reordering.

Coordination with NYC School Food:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for NYC School Food vendors and representatives.
  • Coordinate food ordering, delivery schedules, and menu communications.
  • Liaise with school leadership to adjust meal offerings in alignment with student needs and school policies.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED required; relevant certifications or training in food handling preferred.
  • Must hold valid NYC and NY State School Food Handler certification.
  • 1-2 years of experience in school food service, food safety, or cafeteria operations.
  • Strong understanding of NYC Department of Education and NY State food regulations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with students and staff professionally.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and be on your feet for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and adapting to evolving school needs.
