POSITION SUMMARY & PURPOSE
The Elementary School Counselor is responsible for the day-to-day operation of all aspects of counseling
and services for students for whom they are responsible. The Elementary School Counselor is responsible
for advising and counseling regarding academic, educational, and short-term social and emotional
matters.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

● At the direction of the Superintendent and Principal, directs assignment and training of staff.
● Assists the Principal, Directors, and teachers with evaluation programs for students.
● Commits to ongoing personal and professional development.
● Acts in accordance with a code of ethics appropriate to the position.
Student Performance
● Remains universally accessible and makes an effort to know every student for whom they are
responsible.
● Provides individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their
families regarding academic matters.
● Teaches guidance classes and provides guidance counseling to students through planned
activities to convey educational, social, and important school information, and offers
workshops/seminars for parents.
● Consults, facilitates, and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators,
and pertinent agents on specific student and parent academic and educational matters
including academic modifications and/or accommodations.
● Provides feedback and recommends appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s
academic and educational needs and abilities.
● Identifies students who may need targeted or intensive services, and coordinates with
behavioral health specialists, including support with crisis intervention
● Assists students and/or parents in understanding school policies and procedures
● Provides brief counseling to address social and emotional concerns and appropriately refers
students to behavioral health specialists
● Communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with behavioral health specialists on developing
and implementing student supports
● Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events
Legal and Compliance
● Ensures that Brookside Charter complies with and meets all deadlines associated with state,
federal, and sponsor reporting and statutory requirements.
● Develops and maintains a productive and positive relationship with Missouri Department of
Primary and Secondary Education staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
*All requirements listed below are required unless otherwise designated as “preferred.”
Education and Certifications
● Requires a Master's Degree in School Counseling, Social Work, or Counseling
● Licensure with DESE or Missouri Committee of Professional Registration
Experience
● Experience as an administrator in a school environment is preferred.
● Experience teaching historically underachieving students with a record of positive academic
improvement preferred.
Skills and Traits
● Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office or equivalent software
● The Elementary School Counselor will demonstrate an understanding of how school operations
and administration support instruction.
● The Elementary School Counselor will make sure school procedures are clearly understood and
implemented to serve a single purpose – to support the pursuit of student success holistically
(socioemotional and academic outcomes).
● The candidate must be self-reflective, as well as fair, and respectful of others. While the
Elementary School Counselor will be adept at giving affirming and adjusting feedback fairly and
respectfully, s/he will also be self-reflective and accept feedback from the Board,
Superintendent, teachers, school staff, and others in the same spirit of cooperation and
shared responsibility for future outcomes.
