At the African American Research Library and Cultural Center, this role involves staying updated on contemporary issues, trends, and technology in the library profession, particularly in research libraries, archives, and special collections. The position also requires coordinating with Special Collections staff to handle researcher inquiries using databases, acquiring reference materials for the archival collection, and assisting researchers in the reading room. Regularly participate in the curation of research materials; and develop collections in line with the mission of the organization.
This position requires the individual to model the highest level of excellent customer service and professionalism to internal and external customers of the Division. Additionally, the essential skills of this position requires an individual who is flexible and adaptable in performing tasks and meeting customers’ needs.
This position will also perform related work as assigned and may be assigned to work at any library location based on operational needs.
Requires one (1) year of library experience providing services to all ages.

General Description:
Supervises the performance of and performs library services, providing customer service to library patrons.
Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Provides answers to reference questions, helps customers with computer issues, and provides answers to phone questions at the circulation desk.
Trains, counsels and evaluates assigned staff, including other librarians, volunteers, audio-video (AV) and computer center staff; writes and revises job descriptions, processes paperwork, ensures mandatory trainings are completed; creates the weekly master schedule for the library and the reference desk schedule; coordinates work schedules and leave requests for the department; assigns and assists with duties and tasks as needed.
Serves as Supervisor in Charge (SIC) of library building as scheduled (several times weekly); opens and closes the library; implements the library code of conduct as needed and enters information into the security log; is responsible for the safety of the building and its patrons; if emergencies arise, the SIC handles the emergency and works closely with the security guards; completes corresponding paperwork as required.
Assesses the print, audio, and video collections frequently to ensure that the library is responsive to customers' demands for updated and relevant materials; orders replacement books for regional branch and cluster libraries, manages catalog changes and weeding.
Initiates, plans and presents diverse and creative programs for adults, teens and children alike, including story time, technology classes and other activities that support emergent literacy and creativity; prepares for and conducts the monthly book discussion.
Stays abreast of contemporary issues, trends, and technology in the library profession by attending workshops and professional meetings and reading current literature.
Prepares booklists, bookmarks, website information, and promotional literature; prepares book displays, promotional flyers, signs and bibliographies; prepares and issues public relations materials and press releases promoting library services and events via print and electronic media; develops library outreach programs for non-users and underserved in the community to garner interest in using the library; prepares statistics and narrative reports, and creates other professional communications as needed.
Maintains an attractive and stimulating environment in the children's and young adult departments; creates displays to promote use of library resources; arranges and prepares for two monthly art displays.
Conducts staff meetings and training sessions for staff; provides progress updates to supervisor on work in various areas of responsibility primarily via email and a monthly report, with occasional meetings and reports as warranted or requested.
Handles unplanned occurrences (often with short deadlines) requiring attention and possible problem solving work, these are outside of normal routine or goals and may require allocation of significant time to handle.
