What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outpatient Staff Nurse: Adult Behavioral Health (part-time) position at Brown County?
Provides client care within the context of outpatient services and clinic programs. As a member of a nurse/case manager team meets outpatient client needs, coordinating care including medication provision per prescription and client education where necessary. This position has responsibility for RN services required to meet client need in the county’s Community Support Program (CSP), with our contracted CSP, and for case management of clients in our Crisis and other non-CSP case management programs. Support of the nursing team in the outpatient nurse’s office is also necessary.
Provides cares and services consistent with agency policy and client needs.
Observes, assesses, implements and documents nursing action in the medical record.
Plans, implements, and evaluates procedures that maintain safe client care.
Obtains and manages physician orders as needed.
Administers or directs the administration of medication and treatment consistent with outpatient care practice.
Initiates and/ or assists with emergency outpatient crisis and intervention and measures.
Provides client education where needed.
Provides information to case managers and Outpatient staff relevant to client symptoms and functioning important for quality patient care to be delivered.
Complies with quality assurance standards and participates in quality assurance monitoring and development.
Assists in reporting and providing feedback in respect of other LPN’s and staff engaged in service delivery in the outpatient clinic nurse role.
Participates in the orientation of new personnel.
Processing patient assistance applications follow up and dispensing of medications, answering questions of consumers about medication side effects and how medication should be taken.
Assisting the prescribers with use of samples available, advising on controlled medication fill dates and Avatar questions.
Assisting consumers on the phone and at the service window with doctor/medication questions.
Meeting with drug reps, obtaining sample medications and maintaining these, monitoring quantity and expiration dates.
Entering lab orders into order connect including routine and daily orders.
Administration of antipsychotic injections when needed.
Calling in medications when needed, including controlled medications.
Gathering information for prior authorizations and complete required forms or call the insurance company.
Hand out stimulant scripts making sure the patient has a next appointment and verifying the script has all the necessary information on it.
Completion of medication refill requests from all pharmacies including mail order pharmacies.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. One (1) year experience as staff RN, one (1) year of experience in mental health/AODA fields preferred but, not required. Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.
Licenses and Certifications:
Current RN license from Wisconsin or one of Wisconsin’s compact states.
Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
CPR certification.Knowledge and understanding of the terminology, theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing.
Knowledge of a variety of medications along with their side effects, side actions and contraindications.
Knowledge of basic abnormal behaviors and major mental illnesses.
Knowledge of alcohol and other drug abuse dynamics, programs, and treatment methods.
Knowledge of adult medical problems and treatment approaches.
Ability to initiate, maintain and implement an Integrated Care Plan.
Ability to analyze symptoms and conditions and apply sound nursing principles in making decisions.
Ability to maintain appropriate client caseload, when applicable.
Ability to deal with stress associated with threatening and/or unpredictable client behavior.
