Lead Evening Dog Care Specialist – Independent, High-Responsibility/Lead Role

Freeport, ME | $17–$24 per hour | ⏳ Full-time

Brown Dog Inn, Maine’s premier boutique dog hotel, is seeking a dedicated, experienced professional to take on one of our most important roles—ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of our dogs at the end of the day. This is an independent, career-level position requiring maturity, reliability, and strong decision-making skills. It is a 'Lead' position within the team.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work independently to manage the facility in the evening, ensuring all dogs are safely tucked in for the night.
  • Supervise small, curated groups, maintaining a calm and balanced environment.
  • Monitor and document dog behavior, wellness, and special care needs, providing clear updates for the next shift.
  • Utilize safety tools (leashes, walkie-talkies, logs) to ensure seamless operations.
  • Maintain a clean, home-like environment that aligns with our hygge philosophy.
  • Use smart screens and digital tools for communication, scheduling, and record-keeping.
  • Capture social media updates to highlight the joy and care at Brown Dog Inn.

An Independent Role Requiring Reliability & Maturity

This is a self-directed position that requires someone who is confident working independently, making responsible decisions, and ensuring everything is in place at the end of the night. We need a dependable professional who understands the importance of showing up consistently—the dogs (and our team) rely on you.

We are specifically looking for candidates available for a Friday–Tuesday schedule, working 11 AM – 8 PM.

Who We’re Looking For:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in dog handling, veterinary care, dog walking/sitting, or animal behavior education.
  • Reliable and responsible – this role carries significant responsibility as the final team member on-site.
  • Self-directed and proactive – able to work independently with confidence.
  • Excellent communicator – provides clear, detailed updates to ensure smooth transitions between shifts.
  • Physically active – comfortable walking, playing, and handling dogs in all weather.
  • Calm and confident – able to read and manage canine behavior effectively.
  • Comfortable using digital tools for communication and record-keeping.
  • Experience with social media content creation is a plus!
  • Any special skills (training, grooming, or behavior work) are highly valued.

Perks & Benefits:

  • Competitive pay ($17–$24 per hour) tips
  • IRA match & dental coverage
  • Healthcare premium coverage – We cover 50% of healthcare premiums in years it’s offered, while encouraging employees to explore Marketplace options for the best plans on other years when it is more cost effective there.
  • Career growth and advancement opportunities within a supportive, team-focused environment.
  • Paid training & professional development.
  • Work in a beautiful, nature-focused setting.

This is not an entry-level job—it’s a career opportunity for a responsible adult who is looking for an independent, high-responsibility role in professional dog care. If you are passionate about animals, confident working alone, and looking for a role with meaning and long-term potential, we invite you to apply.

To apply, submit your resume and a brief cover letter highlighting your experience and any special skills you can bring to our team!
