About this Opportunity
Brunswick County is currently accepting applications for a Registered Motor Vehicle (RMV) Specialist to join our Tax Administration Team. Under limited supervision, the RMV Specialist is responsible for preparing and administering monthly motor vehicle billing for registered vehicles in Brunswick County for ad valorem tax purposes. Work includes:
- Ensuring property listings of registered vehicles for all county municipalities and the hospital district.
- Determining the proper classification of the motor vehicles listing provided by the NC DMV.
- Determining vehicles which are taxable, or which may come under a different tax statute.
- Assessing the market value of motor vehicles on both the automated and manual listing system.
- Preparing discovery notices and bills for unregistered motor vehicles.
- Reviewing exempt applications for motor vehicles.
- Updating address changes to determine correct situs.
- Notifying DMV and other counties of address changes.
- Processing transfer documents from other counties that should be listed in Brunswick County.
- Responding to questions on tax laws, policies, and tax problems.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to provide a high level of customer service while exercising tact, courtesy, and firmness when dealing with taxpayers and other members of the public is required. The RMV Specialist reports to the Business and Personal Property Supervisor.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years of clerical, financial, and/or office work experience; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Valid NC or SC drivers’ license is required.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, calculators, etc. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
