JOB TITLE Teen Programming Assistant JOB SUMMARY This position assists the Youth Services Librarian with the creative planning and implementation of activities and other programs within the library geared towards teens. RESPONSIBILITIES In collaboration with the Youth Services Librarian: Plan and implement weekly activities for teens ages 13 and older. Plan and implement crafts and activities for annual programs, i.e. the summer reading program. Plan, organize, implement, and maintain crafts and games for independent, in-library (tabletop) use. Also referred to as passive programming. Plan, organize, and implement special programs and events for teens. Activities may include book talks, reading groups, clubs, school field trips, etc. Assist with outreach services to schools, teen clubs, and other organizations serving local teens. Coordinate special performers, visitors, or speakers for teen enjoyment. Write program reports as required by YSL. Organize and maintain materials for craft projects, events, and clubs. Promote all youth programming. Assist in the evaluation of and long-term planning for teen programming. May perform other duties as required. OUTCOMES Teens enjoy library programs and weekly activities; they are entertained and engaged and feel library programs are a worthwhile activity. Teens believe library programs are appealing and age appropriate. Teens are compelled to visit the library often to enjoy programs. Teens are creatively engaged when making crafts and participating in activities, and are pleased and proud of their creations. Teens think of the library as a place for new, fun, free activities that they truly enjoy. Teens are encouraged to read and use the library. The community sees the library as engaging, inviting, and useful for teens and families. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS High school graduate; college degree preferred. QUALIFICATIONS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Knowledge of teen cognitive/social developmental levels. Knowledge of young adult literature, including graphic novels and new adult materials. Ability to engage and lead a group of teens. Ability to be creative, artistic, imaginative, dramatic, and expressive. Computer skills, including word processing programs, Internet searching, and downloading digital pictures. Ability to act tactfully and courteously with patrons, staff, and volunteers. Lifting materials weighing up to 40 lbs. on an occasional basis; requires reaching and bending. The position requires working evenings and weekends.
