What are the responsibilities and job description for the EWD CAD Technician position at Building Material Distributors, Inc.?
Essential Functions
- Utilize design tools and CAD software to provide accurate material lists, layout drawings and design services to support the sale and installation of engineered wood and other products BMD distributes.
- Communicate clearly and competently with BMD sales reps, building material dealers, builders, framers, engineers, architects and building inspectors.
- Review construction documents and details thoroughly to ensure accurate takeoffs and layouts.
- Provide design calculations for single structural member sizing.
- Become an expert on the features, benefits, and application of all BMD forest products, with an emphasis on engineered wood products’ structural design properties.
- Develop in-depth knowledge of building codes and local framing practices.
- Perform quality control checks on work performed by outside contractors.
- Respond quickly and competently to design or installation issues and collaborate with BMD’s suppliers to develop effective solutions.
- Become proficient with additional estimating tools to assist with sales of decking, railing and exterior cladding products.
- Communicate frequently with BMD’s sales team regarding status of requested projects.
- Manage, prioritize and organize workflow to deliver projects accurately and on time.
- Perform additional duties as required and requested.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience in the building materials or construction industry.
- Working knowledge of CAD system, blueprint reading and drafting.
- Knowledge of engineered wood products, wood framing practices, building codes, and industry terminology.
- Strong math and communication skills.
Travel: Must have personal vehicle in safe operating condition for infrequent travel to construction sites and BMD distribution center. Limited overnight travel may be required. Mileage reimbursement provided.
Technology/Computer Skills: Proficient in Exacte, iStruct or comparable structural frame software; Microsoft Windows, Outlook, SharePoint, Word and Excel; Adobe Acrobat; internet usage; mobile devices.
Language/Interpersonal Relationships Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent customer service and active listening skills; proficient at reading and interpreting blueprints and construction documents; communicates clearly, professionally, and confidently with others.
Mathematical Skills: Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals in all units of measure, compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
Reasoning Ability: Uses common sense and strong analytical skills to fulfill job requirements and carry out instructions, evaluate information and protect the Company from liability; capable of applying problem solving techniques and dealing with problems involving several variables; attentive to accuracy and detail; ethical.

Physical Demands: Light demands - exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, 10 lbs frequently. Prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing at desk and utilizing computer monitor, mouse and keyboard.
Work Environment: Works out of an office with potential to work from home once proficient. May travel to job sites where enhanced safety awareness and PPE is required.
Degree of Supervision: General Supervision: Normally requires little instruction or supervision on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments.
