Deputy Fire Marshal
Department: Fire Marshal
Hiring Range: $29.80 - $35.80 per hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This position works to prevent fires by performing fire inspections, building and plan reviews, and fire origin and cause investigations. This position requires approximately 40 hours of work per workweek.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To successfully perform this position, an individual must be able to perform the following:
- Enforces the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code and other applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and codes
- Performs fire inspections in existing buildings and new construction, alterations, or renovations, educating the general public on fire prevention tactics and reviewing building plans as necessary
- Performs fire origin and cause investigations and other emergency response related duties, including, but not limited to, fire related complaints
- Reviews, prepares, and issues construction permits and operational permits for compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and codes
- Maintains the inventory and supplies necessary for fire marshal’s office duties and responsibilities
- Provides recommendations regarding Fire Marshal/Emergency Services Department personnel decisions such as hiring, performance evaluations, scheduling, promoting, personnel grievances, and disciplinary actions such as demoting, suspending, and terminating
- Assists the Chief Fire Marshal in day-to-day operations, and assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Chief Fire Marshal only for the time in which they are unavailable
- Supports the county emergency management division when needed
- Performs other duties as required or assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Three (3) years of experience in local and/or state fire and emergency servicesoperations and functions developing knowledge and skills necessary for this position such as an understanding of the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code, fire investigations, and fire scene operations
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (UPON HIRE, UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED):
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License
- North Carolina Firefighter 1 & 2 Certification
- North Carolina Level 1 Fire Prevention Inspector Certification
- North Carolina Level 2 Fire Prevention Inspector Certification
- Emergency Vehicle Driver Certification North Carolina – North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal
- North Carolina Emergency Management of FEMA – ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800
- Hazardous Materials Responder – North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal
- Class A Non-CDL Driver's License (within 6 months of hire)
- Fire Investigator Technician and/or Fire Arson Investigator – North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (within 1 year of hire)
- North Carolina Level 3 Fire Prevention Inspector Certification (within 1 year of hire)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, AND OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
- Standard vision requirements, with or without corrective lenses
- Occasionally lifts more than one hundred (100) pounds
- Occasionally spends time standing, walking, sitting, pushing or pulling, and engaging in repetitive motions
- Routinely spends time speaking or hearing, using hands or fingers to handle, feel, type, or text, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and reaching with hands and arms
- Frequently lifts up to ten (10) pounds
- Must be able to express and exchange ideas through verbal communications
- Must be able to prepare and analyze written or computer data
- Must be able to engage in visual inspections involving small parts
- Must be able to observe general surroundings and activities
- Working in situations without following safety measures and not wearing appropriate personal protective equipment ("PPE") may result in incapacitating accidents, total disability, critical illness, or loss of life
- Working conditions requires the exposure to disagreeable, hazardous elements
- Individuals are occasionally exposed to wet, humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), fires, risk of electrical shock, vibrations, breathing apparatuses, and bloodborne pathogens
- Individuals occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, with explosives, and in high, precarious places
- Individuals are routinely exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outdoor weather conditions
- Subjected to considerable mental effort and potential stressful situations during day to day operations
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
