JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Public Works (DPW) Staff Showers Manager will oversee all aspects of the Black Rock City (BRC) Staff Showers, including planning, building, maintenance and strike of the facilities on-site. Responsibilities will include crew staffing and daily task management, budgeting, resource tracking and purchasing, providing a professional interface with all Burning Man Staff, and scheduling for the department’s needs to ensure smooth operations through the whole event production cycle.
This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is:
- From April - July: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, based fully remote.
- From July - September: Full-Time, Exempt, based on-site out of Black Rock City, Nevada.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operations (45%)
- Schedule crew and plan for the on-site installation and strike of the Staff Showers in Collaboration with the DPW Showers Build Lead and the DPW Showers Strike Lead; liaise with supporting crews and vendors to coordinate facilities planning, build, strike, and clean up.
- Work with the DPW Logistics Manager to ensure shower facilities arrive and are returned in proper condition, and defer to them in all vendor communications.
- Oversee the daily cleaning and maintenance of shower facilities and communal area; adhere to and exercise health and sanitation best practices, ensure that all areas meet required standards of cleanliness.
- Create and maintain a respectful, friendly, and comfortable environment where services are provided with care, and thoughtful acknowledgment is given to the different comfort levels of facilities users.
- Assess and be accessible to listen to any special needs of individuals; offer assistance in every manner practical, understand what accommodations for differently abled bodies are available and how to talk about them.
- Work with individuals and specific departments to accommodate any needs that remain outside of standard procedures (e.g. specific privacy concerns, ADA needs, after hours crew needs, emergency access).
- Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the work environment and train Showers Staff to uphold and practice discretion in order to ensure a safe, sanitary and respectful environment.
- Monitor and manage facilities user behavior; take action when necessary to prevent disorderly, inappropriate conduct or property damage.
- Post clearly visible signage of user-agreement policies which all guests can see upon arrival and entering; Maintain order and keep all shower areas clean and free of spills, trash, and safety hazards.
- Maintain set open hours, ensure showers are appropriately staffed for daily use, and any changes to shower times are proactively and effectively announced to all BRC Staff, maintaining open radio updates regarding changing hours due to extreme weather conditions.
Personnel Management (35%)
- Work with the DPW Support Operations Manager to assemble a team and assist with the hiring process in a timely manner.
- Determine hiring timeline and duration of each role; as needed, correspond with previous crew members, write or update job descriptions, interview candidates.
- Train the showers crew and provide clear communication and documentation of expectations and agreements.
- Maintain an activity log accurately outlining and tracking daily activities and cleaning schedule.
- Log and report crew work hours; confirm timesheets with crew and submit to payroll by weekly deadline.
- Create and actively manage work schedules for the team; post at least one week in advance and communicate changes in a timely way.
- Coordinate and plan for meetings to assign and check in on tasks, review timeline, and answer any questions.
- Know, share, and use the proper pathways of communication for escalating personnel issues; Learn how to create proper supporting documentation regarding such matters.
- Ensure that all team members are provided with, and properly use, the necessary OSHA approved safety equipment.
Administrative (15%)
- Become familiar with the online Marcato request system and its Tech Team; work with the DPW Support Operations Manager to enter department needs and set up resources for the season.
- Review Marcato requests for all Burning Man Staff Departments and handle preparations for the production of shower pogs and passes for their crews.
- Anticipate and track the daily use of cleaning supplies; place pre-season requests and orders for replenishment as necessary.
- Maintain budget awareness: monies spent, current balance, anticipated costs etc. Proactively discuss any potential adjustments or concerns with the DPW Support Operations Manager as soon as possible.
- Track and submit receipts and expense reports as requested, ensure forms are complete and on time (within 30 days of transaction).
- Assume responsibility for and ensure that all documentation meets the standards outlined and shared by the DPW Support Operations Manager.
- Prepare written feedback for DPW Management describing the successes of the season, areas in need of improvement and suggestions for improved overall efficiency; Submit an end-of-season EMBER Report.
Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)
- Attend, host and support crew attendance to relevant Meetings and maintain related correspondence; stay up to date with email correspondence and departmental communications. Distribute any relevant information to crew members in a timely fashion.
- Work with the Showers Crew to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal.
- Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
- Monitor well-being of staff and self, be aware of work expectations while also setting realistic boundaries, and proactively address any concerns with management.
- Perform various other duties as required.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
- Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.
- Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
- Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team.
- Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
- Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Experienced in hospitality, calm communication in a high-volume and sensitive environment requiring excellent discretion, and facility maintenance.
- Ability to implement current cleaning and sanitation procedures as they apply to public shower facilities.
- Ability to train, motivate, and lead a team by example; experienced in creating schedules and functional workflows and managing volunteers with a willingness to promote their strengths and respect their limitations.
- Strong organizational skills with the capacity to accurately maintain tracking logs for all relevant timelines, activities and needs; Experienced in managing budgets, purchasing, and receiving.
- Clear, service-oriented communication, verbally and written; Able to evaluate, tailor style and patiently respond to needs for support. Experience with using 2 way radios.
- A respectful and professional demeanor; Honest and ethical with a dedication to the Burning Man principles and behavioral standards.
- Working knowledge of Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive), Microsoft Word, and Excel; Ability to learn and effectively use and update existing online systems and documents.
- Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality, and low to no visibility at times.
- Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada.
Preferred
- First-Aid knowledge.
- It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture, and/or is very experienced in a variety of event production.

COMPENSATION
Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:
- From April - July is $19.00 to $21.00 per hour.
- From July - September is $1100.00 to $1250.00 per week.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
- On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
