JOB TITLE: Lifeguard
REPORTS TO: Director of Aquatics
POSITION OBJECTIVES:
The position is responsible for member and guest safety using the Club’s aquatics facilities.
Who You Are
- You are at least 16 years of age.
- You have prior lifeguarding experience (preferred), and first aid certification (we will provide CPR training).
- You have your lifeguarding certification.
- You are able to perform daily swim (20 laps).
- You are able to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

- Burning Tree Country Club is, first and foremost, a private golf club that places high importance on the creation of an open and family oriented environment.
- The club was founded in 1962.
- Our amenities include an 18hole golf course which has hosted US Open Qualifiers and Met PGA events, an 8lane 25meter pool with a diving well, HarTru tennis courts, a platform tennis complex, and multiple member and event dining options. We have active junior programs in golf, tennis and aquatics and offer a summer camp.
- We take pride in our daily ala carte service, as well as our first class events created by our Events & Banquets Team.
- Our Food & Beverage department incudes various a la carte outlets (indoors and outdoors; i.e. The Grille Room, Founders Bar, Patio and Salons), catering to all members and guests needs according to established rules and etiquette.
The Essentials
- The primary responsibility of a lifeguard is to ensure member safety and protect lives.
- Prevent injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.
- Enforce facility rules and regulations and educate members about them.
- Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies.
- Administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an emergency and administer oxygen when needed.
- Vacuum and skim pool.
- Take hourly water tests.
- Pool area maintenance.
- Pool membership check in.
The Expectations
- Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
- Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
- Always present professional appearance and attitude and maintains a high standard of customer service.
- Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
- Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports.
- Perform miscellaneous jobrelated duties as assigned.
The Standards
Education and Experience:
- Prior lifeguarding experience preferred.
- Minimum age requirement is 16 (Swimming pool area), to meet CT Minor Law Guidelines.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:
- First Aid Certification.
- CPR Certified.
- Lifeguarding Certification.
- Ability to perform daily swim (20 Laps).
- All Certifications must be from American Red Cross. Cards and recertification must be in the employee’s area of responsibility and remain current throughout employment.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Language and Communication Skills:
- Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to deal with problems involving standard situations.
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
- Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
Physical, sensory, and motor demands:
- Can demonstrate the skills involved in being a lifeguard as taught by American Red Cross. Not excluding additional skills and routines asked by management.
- Be able to Carry/Move Objects up to 50 lbs.
