What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Safety & Security Specialist position at BUSINESS OFFICE?
The School Safety & Security Specialist is responsible for overseeing safety within specified Reynoldsburg school buildings. Supervised by the Director of Safety & Security, with an overall mission of ensuring a secure facility for students and staff and fostering a safe learning environment. The Safety & Security Specialist works collaboratively with the building Principal to maintain order, investigate incidents and complaints, protect assets and enforce the code of conduct and Board policies when applicable. The work year is 200 days and follows the academic school year calendar with the additional coverage of extracurricular activities, home sporting events, and graduation.
General performance standards:
- Interact with students to maintain discipline, preserve order and resolve disciplinary problems
- Be visible throughout the school and grounds to include before/after lunches
- Intervene between students or groups when necessary, and attempt to control disorder before it escalates
- Set the example for appropriate behaviors for students and staff
- Dress as an adult professional, setting a positive image for the students and staff of the building
- Conduct relevant investigations at the request of the building Principal to properly document reports of crime, disorder or code of conduct violations
- Continuously evaluate the building and grounds to identify safety risks or vulnerabilities and work toward a resolution
- Monitor staff and student activities, visitor control procedures, and correct safety issues or violations if observed
- Assist in the development, implementation, scheduling, and execution of safety drills and emergency preparedness training
- Proactively prevent crime through the use of technology, emergency planning, and positive interactions with students and staff
- Building assignments can be modified to meet the needs of the district or as requested by the Director of Safety and Security
- Please note: Assignment changes may be made at a moment’s notice in anticipation or as a result of an emergency situation or pending disorder
Specific Duties:
- Arrive promptly to the school at the beginning of the school day to be available when the doors unlock for student access
- Be present at a high traffic entry point during student arrival to visually screen incoming staff, students, and direct visitors appropriately
- Quickly act upon reasonable suspicion to interrupt, immediately impede or investigate a situation that could create a danger to students, staff or district assets or property
- Become the lead safety consultant to school staff and Principal during emergency or safety related incidents. Be prepared to make necessary decisions (Offering Guidance Only)
- Respond to or be present near areas of concern when information indicates the potential for disorder is probable
- Interact positively with students and staff
- Be approachable for reports of disorder or other concerns and respond accordingly
- Adhere to district policy and Ohio law when notified of abuse, bullying, suicidal thoughts or intentions, or reports of criminal activity or suspicious behavior
- Interject when disorder is observed or reported to stop the escalation of an event between students or staff
- Always have possession of and monitor the school issued radio so as to be reachable and available when needed
- Counsel students on negative behavior, setting expectations and harboring an atmosphere that promotes proper decision making
- Report code of conduct violations and disciplinary problems to the Principal or Assistant Principal when applicable
- Keep the building administration apprised of ongoing issues, concerns or reports
- Liaison with the Fire Marshall or other building inspectors and become the point of contact for concerns or violations. Oversee, in collaboration with the Principal, the correction of such violations
- Have detailed knowledge of the Emergency Operation Plan (EOP) for the building(s) and operate in accordance with its directives
- Conduct a yearly review of the building EOP and ensure personnel updates are submitted to the Director of Safety and Security
- Attend a yearly EOP review committee meeting to provide insight into necessary updates, changes or modifications to the existing EOP for the building(s)
- Assist the building administration in scheduling the yearly fire, tornado and safety drills
- Attend safety meetings and other required training
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Safety and Security
