DEFINITION
Under direction of the Director of Fiscal Services, perform complex clerical accounting work related to the district’s budget, general ledger functions, financial reports and student attendance; interpret, apply, explain and assure compliance with complex rules, regulations and procedures related to assigned functions.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Accounting Assistant III incumbents lead and train Student Records Secretaries as required, and are responsible for complex accounting areas such as compilation and preparation of financial reports, general ledger and the budget document. Accounting Assistant II positions are assigned experienced-level accounting work in areas such as accounts payable, payroll, employee benefits and student body accounting and budget computations. Accounting Assistant I is an entry-level classification in the series. Incumbents perform routine and repetitive duties in the maintenance of financial records and accounts.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Perform a variety of complex and responsible clerical accounting duties related to district’s general ledger, budgets, student attendance accounting, compilation and preparation of fiscal reports.
Prepare, process, review, verify and audit financial data, records and reports as assigned.
Audit accounting work to assure accuracy, completeness and adherence to established fiscal policies, procedures, regulations and laws.
Operate office machines including calculators and computer equipment; verify code and enter data in appropriate computer systems.
Review computer generated reports, detect and correct exceptions and discrepancies. Communicate and coordinate accounting activities with other district departments, schools and personnel, vendors and government and private agencies.
Train and provide work direction to assigned personnel. Prepare journal vouchers and budget revisions, including year-end entries.
Assist with special projects including the compilation and preparation of the district’s budget document, analysis and reconciliation of district funds, internal financial reports and other special projects as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Knowledge of:
Basic financial accounting principles and procedures.
General rules and practices pertaining to assigned public sector accounting procedures.
Procedures used in automated accounting systems.
Policies and practices governing public sector budget and general ledger functions.
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
Financial and statistical record keeping techniques.
Knowledge of and ability to interpret state and federal regulations and district procedures as they relate to job assignments.
Skill in gathering and analyzing data and the ability to train and lead the work of others. Preparation of maintenance of current and accurate financial records.
Ability to:
Perform complex and responsible clerical accounting duties related to the district budget and general accounting functions.
Post data and make arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately.

Prepare complex auditing and clerical accounting work with minimal supervision

Training and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by course work in accounting or financial record keeping and three years of increasingly responsible experience maintaining financial or statistical records.
