FLSA: Non-Exempt, Full Time
Schedule: Regularly 40 hours a week; Sunday - Thursday 8:45 - 5:15. This schedule can and will change based on the needs of the department, programs, and after-hours events.
Hourly Rate: $17.50/hour
Position Summary: Butterfly Pavilion seeks a creative, energetic, tech savvy, culturally competent individual with a passion for enhancing engagement for visitors of Butterfly Pavilion through concepts involving science, nature, and invertebrates to join our Programs & Interpretation (P&I) team as a full-time Exhibit Interpretation Lead. This person will help lead a large team of staff, interns, and volunteer interpreters. Butterfly Pavilion strives to provide programs that promote appreciation, understanding, and conservation of invertebrates and habitats worldwide to a diverse community. Bilingual individuals fluent in English and Spanish, those who have worked with children, and leadership experience is a plus.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Interacting with Butterfly Pavilion guests as they visit all of our exhibits.
- Facilitating play-based learning and providing educational information to guests of all ages.
- Using live animals to demonstrate science-based concepts to guests.
- Conducting daily public programming and developing curriculum.
- Creating meaningful interaction between the exhibit and guests for a deeper and more thoughtful experience and to make connections between exhibit topic and daily life.
- Working alongside interpreters, interns, and volunteers to provide high-quality interpretation and complete project work to enhance exhibit experiences.
- Responsible for specific exhibit expertise and dissemination of specific exhibit content as assigned.
- Support coordination of daily interpretation schedule including staff, volunteers, and interns.
- Facilitate the training of new staff, volunteers, and interns in animal handlining, interpretation techniques, and up-to-date protocols.
- Act as interpretation lead when manager/coordinator are not on site including (but not limited to) answering radio calls, attending to guest and staff/intern/volunteer questions, and ensuring all exhibits and processes and procedures have been properly prepared and followed for daily operations.
Additional Duties:
- Attending required branch and facility meetings and staying up to date on all communications from within the organization
- Collaborating with P&I team to ensure optimal guest experience
- Collaborating with P&I department to design, develop and implement new curricula or programs or redesign existing curricula to meet the needs of diverse audiences
- Support the Interpretation Coordinator in scheduling staff and volunteers
- Serve as the trainer for new staff and volunteers
- Provide administrative support to Programs & Interpretation Department
- Support troubleshooting for issues with exhibit technology and interactives and submitting maintenance requests

Position Qualifications and Experience:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Pursuing or holding a degree in interpretation, education, environmental sciences, biology or related fields, or equivalent work experience
- 1-2 years experience working in a non-formal education/museum/education setting
- Prior experience in a customer service-based role
- Prior experience working with individuals of different ages and abilities, especially children
- Experience leading a team is preferred
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Enthusiastic, strong sense of fun, and patient
- Organized and flexible
- Fluency in Spanish and English is a plus
