Primary Function:
The Accountant position performs the transactional accounting work of the agency and assists in the month-end closing process. Typically reports to a supervisor or accounting manager.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Performs the daily transactions of insurance accounting which includes direct bill reconciliations, receipts, vendor payables, company payables and customer and premium finance company returns. The accountant will generally be the point person in one or more of these areas.
- Performs reconciliations in the agency management software related to the transactions listed above. Also acts as a liaison between company/broker in resolving billing discrepancies.
- Prepares and processes needed journal entries as needed into the agency management software.
- Assists as needed with the month-end closing process including preparing accurate, compliant and timely balance sheet reconciliations. Performing the agency's bank reconciliations may be included in these duties.
- Overtime work as needed.
- Special projects as needed and assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Designations:
- Six (6) hours of college accounting course work required
- Accounting or business degree preferred
- Education requirements can be waived with 3 years of accounting position experience
Skill Requirements:
- Experience and proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel and/or G Suite products including Gmail, Docs word processing, Sheets, and Drive cloud storage
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work with numbers including basic calculations
- Organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Projects professional appearance and manner
- Self-starter with the ability to be flexible
- High attention to detail
- Good analytical and problem solving skills
Work Experience:
- Three (3) years' work experience in accounting
- Experience requirement can be waived with a college accounting degree
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to communicate effectively with clients, producers, carriers and staff
- Ability to stand or sit at a workstation during a standard workday
- Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and printer
- Ability to move about the office to access office machinery and supplies
Mental Requirements:
- Ability to work and meet challenging deadlines and expectations
- Job entails meticulous attention to detail. Must perform well with frequent interruptions or distractions.
- Ability to quickly adjust priorities, focus and direction as circumstances dictates
