What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Assistant (Guyandotte Branch) position at Cabell County Public Library?
SUMMARY: Entry level paraprofessional position in a library branch with responsibilities for direct public service in assisting all ages of patrons with use of the branch collection and loan of materials, promotion and maintenance of services and materials, and programming for children.
This position will plan and implement Story Hour Weekly.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. 1. To assist the public in their use of the library, increase quality of service, and optimize patron satisfaction through direct public relations and assistance.
a. Greets the public and answers the telephone.
b. Directs visitors, provides book recommendations, and answers basic questions.
c. Locates books for public using standard search methods.
d. Searches for and helps locate materials for common reference requests.
e. Assists public in use of computers, faxes, viewing/duplicating or other equipment and provides change.
f. Actively seeks opportunities to promote CCPL programs and services to our users/community.
2. To perform standard circulation functions, using SIRSI, while maintaining confidentiality of library user records.
a. Specifically checks-out and checks-in materials, places holds and loans against books as requested, etc.
b. Processes library card applications and enters user data.
c. Calculates and collects fines.
d. Empties book drop and transports books to desk for check-in.
3. To help maintain branch collection for ease of access and use: by shelving books and other materials, reading shelves to ensure accuracy, preparing periodicals for display and circulation, etc.
4. To plan and implement children’s library programs at the branch so as to foster their enjoyment of reading.
a. Selects appropriate titles for reading aloud to groups.
b. Schedules story hours and system-sponsored children’s events on a regular basis.
5. To provide minimal custodial care, especially on days when the Branch Custodian is not scheduled.
a. Cleans, mops, and vacuums.
b. Collects and disposes of trash.
c. Sets up and takes down the branch meeting room according to schedule of events.
d. Seasonal duties like snow removal and watering of flowers.
6. To perform other reasonable related duties (with appropriate accommodation if necessary) as assigned by immediate supervisor and other administration as required.
a. Files cards, pamphlets, tax forms, and loose-leaf service inserts and maintains these through periodic weeding, replacement and acquisition of new materials.
b. Substitutes in other branches as needed and staffing permits.
REQUIREMENTS: Strong interpersonal skills, especially with children.
Ability to read aloud with expression.
Familiarity and experience with on-line public access catalog and computer knowledge.
Ability to work independently with little supervision.
Capable of standing, walking, reaching, and bending for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift heavy library materials (approximately 25 lbs).
EDUCATION: High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
