Library Assistant I (Youth Services Department)
SUMMARY: A versatile paraprofessional position in a youth-orientated situation, combining skills in standard circulation skills, programming, and collection maintenance duties with basic administrative responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. 1. To assist the public in their use of the library, increase quality of service, and optimize patron satisfaction through direct public relations and assistance.
a. Greets the public, answers the telephone, directs visitors, provides juvenile and other material recommendations, and answers basic questions.
b. Locates books and materials for public using standard search methods.
c. Assists public in use of computers, faxes, viewing/duplicating or other equipment and provides change.
2. To perform standard circulation functions, using SIRSI, while maintaining confidentiality of library user records.
a. Specifically checks-out and checks-in materials, places holds and loans against items as requested, etc.
b. Checks in and out computers.
c. Fills loan requests.
d. Processes books when they arrive in the department.
3. Help maintain Youth Services collection ease of use.
a. Shelves books and other materials.
b. Reads shelves to ensure materials are properly placed.
c. Weeds outdated and deteriorating books from the collection with final approval from youth service manager.
4. Assists with the development of youth service programs and activities within the Main library.
a. Plans and implements programs on a regular basis.
b. Helps in the development of programs for children and young adults.
c. Presents programs and shares ideas with the community to assist in community involvement.
5. To perform other reasonable related duties (with appropriate accommodation if necessary) as assigned by immediate supervisor and other administration as required.
a. Substitutes in other Main Library public service departments as staffing needs require.
REQUIREMENTS: 2-3 years of library or related service experience
Ability to work independently with little supervision.
Capable of standing, walking, reaching, and bending for extended periods of time.
Able to effectively communicate with diverse library clientele, especially children.
Ability to lift heavy library materials (approximately 25 lbs)
EDUCATION: High school diploma or G.E.D. required
