PRIMARY PURPOSE OF JOB
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and staff of a custom cabinet manufacturing workshop and allocating resources appropriately to meet production standards and schedules. The Shop Manager is the direct point of contact for the Department Leads, addressing any concerns or conflicts that may arise during their work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Supervises shop floor activities and organizes workflow including assigning tasks to staff, monitoring progress and providing guidance on work procedures and techniques.
- Provides coverage for the responsibilities of absent operations Department Leads.
- Performs in any production seat necessary to maintain ideal company productivity
- Plans, monitors, and appraises job results.
- Submits reports on performance and progress, of projects and of staff.
- Identifies issues in efficiency and suggests improvements.
- Demonstrates professionalism in all forms of communication.
- Develops and maintains work schedules for employees by coordinating shift assignments, vacation requests, and sick leave coverage.
- Seeks and maintains continued training and education as required by Concepts by Design, such as required reading and training events outside the scope of daily operations.
- Provides feedback on Technical / Design issues.
- Coaches, counsels, and evaluates staff.
- Coordinates, and enforces systems, policies, and procedures that ensure safety, quality and cost effectiveness across the operations divisions.
- Oversees the submission of timesheets, quality control logs, performance metrics and any other paperwork or digital logs necessary to maintain production and quality systems.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES
- Proven experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and tools common to cabinet making.
- Ability to multitask and adapt to scheduling changes and customer service needs.
- Minimum three years’ experience in the construction and installation of cabinets and closets.
- Ability to problem solve.
- Strong understanding of plans which detail the layout and appearance of cabinetry and closets.
- Ability to be decisive; evaluating tasks, duties, projects, or people using good judgment.
- Ability to take initiative; to make, form, conceive and visualize thoughts and expressions to produce new methods, suggestions, or solutions.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage daily activities to ensure timely and accurate results.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, team environment with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and to ensure accuracy of reports and data.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- A capacity for learning new skills quickly.
- Ability to work autonomously as well as in a team.
- Strong knowledge of Crow’s Nest software.
- Sufficient understanding of production operations to be able to assist in operations departments.
- Strong understanding of cabinet construction methods and restrictions.
- Strong understanding of material limitations (max sheet sizes, grain matching, melamine material restrictions).
- Strong understanding of Concepts by Design’s cabinet and quality standards.
- Strong understanding of closet materials/moldings/door profile limitations.
