The spectrum utilization study intern position resides in the Wireless Technologies department at CableLabs. This department conducts research and development in new and emerging wireless technologies that include 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi, and spectrum-sharing strategies. Our team plays a crucial role in developing industry standards and technical regulatory policy for mobile and Wi-Fi network design, deployment, service delivery, and operations in licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

The Wireless Technologies group at CableLabs is seeking candidates for a summer intern position. In this role, you will be involved in spectrum-sharing studies and interacting with operators, regulatory policy, and standard bodies. The project will likely make direct impacts in the industry as well as generate papers and patents with solid contributions. The internship could be extended after the summer depending on mutual interests.
What You’ll Do
- A vast majority of usable RF spectrum is occupied, but insufficiently utilized. The focus of the project is to develop and build an automated spectrum monitoring tool to measure occupancy across frequency, time, and location at a low cost that can be scaled.
- The intern will assist the team to study and develop spectral usage activities based on field measurement data.
- The intern will also assist in support activities that include:
- Characterize and optimize the RF performance of spectrum monitoring devices.
- Automate the operation of spectrum monitoring devices.
- Develop software tools and code to process data and generate reports.
- Design and document data analysis algorithm
- Research deep learning and machine learning algorithms for spectrum-sharing purposes.
- Document and write necessary papers or technical reports on research outcomes.
Qualifications
What Is a Must Have
- The Candidate must be pursuing a Master's degree or Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, or a similar field with an emphasis on Telecommunications and data analysis.
- Knowledge of wireless communications and RF fundamentals.
- Hands-on experience with data processing.
- Hands-on experience in Matlab, Python, or C/C .
What Will Set You Apart
- Senior Ph.D. student is preferred.
- Knowledge of regulatory spectrum policy and standard bodies spectrum-related requirements.
- Knowledge and experience of cloud databases.
- Knowledge of artificial intelligence.
- Excellent analytical skills and critical thinking skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated and willingness to learn.
