Sr. Clooud Network Engineer
Position Summary: Anderson Computing & Information Services (ACIS) provides innovative IT services to the Anderson School of Management. Under the direction of the Chief Technology ODicer, the Senior Cloud & Network Engineer will manage and optimize our hybrid cloud and onpremises infrastructure.
This role involves being part of and working with a diverse team to oversee network and systems administration in a complex, multi-vendor environment serving approximately 500 Anderson faculty and staD, and 2300 students in various programs. The ACIS Infrastructure & IT Operations group is responsible for maintaining the stability and performance of the school's IT infrastructure, including network, server, research computing, and cloud services. Ensuring seamless operation and quick resolution of any technical issues that arise, supporting the academic and administrative needs of the Anderson School.
The incumbent will lead the planning, design, and maintenance of network, server, and computing services to ensure stable IT operations. Major duties include managing complex cloud and network projects, coordinating with team members, and providing technical expertise and third-tier escalation support. The engineer will also assist in developing collaborative policies and procedures for cloud and network infrastructure configuration and user rights.
This position will interface with other Anderson and UCLA departments and technology partners, such as UCLA Central IT, Cisco, Microsoft, and AWS. Responsibilities include lifecycle management and continuous improvements of IT systems, ensuring that the infrastructure evolves to meet changing needs. The engineer will regularly report to the CTO and IT Operations Manager on project and system health, propose solutions to complex problems, and serve as a technical consultant to other ACIS teams.
Type of Supervision Received and/or Exercised:
Incumbent must be able to function autonomously, with minimal supervision and manage multiple concurrent projects, as well as work eDectively as a member of the ACIS Infrastructure & IT Operations team. This role requires the ability to exercise sound judgment and take independent action in response to evolving federated, hybrid cloud, hardware, and software requirements, necessitating program modifications and redesign. Examples of independent actions include initiating collaborative problem-solving sessions with team members to address complex network issues, proposing and implementing improvements to cloud infrastructure based on emerging technologies, and continuously evaluating system performance to recommend enhancements.
Function Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions Network Management & Sr Systems Engineering
A.1: Assist with the development and execution of long-range strategic plans (network, server and identity infrastructure) for a complex administrative and instructional organization.
A.2: Manage and ensure optimal operation of all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, hubs, UPSs, and so on.
A.3: Develop and deploy methodologies for testing network performance and providing network performance statistics and reports.
A.4: Provide specification for hardware and software requirements and functionality for the Anderson network.
A.5: Provide management and expertise for troubleshooting of network and system operating systems, applications, databases and associated communications and interfaces including Microsoft, Cisco, and common network communication protocols.
A.6: Provide supervision and expertise for troubleshooting of Anderson communications equipment and cabling such as routers, switches, gateways, fiber optic cables, unshielded twisted pair cable and associated pin configuration.
A.7: Supervise the installation and maintenance of network equipment such as servers, power supplies, memory, hard disk arrays, controllers and other associated hardware.
A.8: Research, evaluate, recommend, and deploy new technology (network products, services, protocols and standards), whether on premise or hosted on campus or by a cloud provider, to seamlessly integrate within the existing AndersonNet infrastructure.
A.9: Establish and maintain regular written and in-person communications with the organization s executives, decision-makers, stakeholders, department heads, and end users regarding pertinent network activities.
A.10: Manage and ensure eDectiveness of security solutions, including firewalls, and intrusion detection systems.
A11: Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory (system and end-user) and related documentation
Cloud Engineer
B1: Manage and ensure eDectiveness of computing infrastructure, including physical, virtual, hosted, network and cloud infrastructure and their associated operating systems and software.
B2: Consult with other member of ACIS staD to initiate timely solutions to cloud, network and systems problems.
B.3: Serve as a point of escalation (third tier) regarding connectivity issues.
B.4: Infrastructure as Code: design and security, configuration management, integration, deployment, performance monitoring and tuning, automation of infrastructure.
